questions for those who still cook for the family after WLS

I know i ask a lot of questions, sorry. I make everything I can from scratch. This involves tasting the food since I don't usually use recipes. During my pre op diet I would keep a bowl next to me and taste something then spit it back out so I didn't actually eat it. I know that sounds gross but I am not sure what else to do. Can I still do that post op?

I cook from scratch too, but a taste is just a taste, not a heaping great spoonful!!!!   You need to retrain yourself on how much food constitutes a taste and how much is a helping if you think a taste is a problem ...   If it's something you make regularly, you probably know your recipe from heart and so really don't need to taste it.   Alternatively, ask your husband or kids or whoever to taste it for you - if it's for them anyway!

Spitting out food after it is in your mouth is not only pretty disgusting devil, it also counts as disordered eating and is NOT something that should be encouraged pre or post op

I know it's not the prettiest thing lol. My husband works nights and food is usually too hot for my kids to taste test. For now, while I am newly post op I think I will make things I already know until it is Ok to taste things. You are exactly right,. I need to take all that's necessary to taste and not an actual bite.

I do the taste test now. But at th beginning I'd get my husband to taste test everything

Sounds crazy, but I cooked by smell. I knew if it smelled right it probably tasted good.
I do taste a bit with new rrcipes or pressgang DH into it.

I fight badgers with spoons.

Sure, you can take small bites. I rarely taste test anymore just because I don't like very many kinds of meat anymore. Btw, after surgery (and for the first time in my life) I did chew some foods and spit them out. I had such a strong desire to chew and to get a small taste of some food that I did it for a couple of weeks. It is definitely tough cooking for my family now, keep up the hard work!

Hi.

Silly question,... How did you add your pre surgery and other weights (not the tracker) to your posts?

I have been trying to figure it out for a week?

If only stupidity could cause weight loss, I wouldn't  have needed WLS.

Thanks.

In the months post op where my diet was very limited (like the liquid and pureed phases) I stuck to very simple meals that I didn't have to taste.  Once I could join in the meals, I moved to simple meals that were WLS friendly in part.  So I always had a potatoes or pasta or rice on the table, but not mixed in, so that I could go without it.   I went pretty quickly to my normal way of cooking adjusting for my needs.  Spaghetti and Meatballs night, became meatballs for me with sauce, spaghetti and garlic bread and salad for them.  Once I could eat a little more, it became meatballs and salad for me.   I make a lot of NON-casserole dishes, that are protein and fresh vegetable heavy and where the carbs can be separated out from the meal.
