Low iron. What is best?

I had my 3 month lab work/appointment and everything was good but my iron was low. ...38. So the nut told me to get ferrous sulfate 325 mg. Is this the form that causes constipation? I tried to search iron but couldn't find the info. What iron do you all take? Thanks for your help?

Yes, ferrous sulfate is know for causing constipation and sometimes an upset stomach or stomach pain.  It's also not absorbed very well in a low-acid environment like our pouch.

I like carbonyl iron because it's all elemental iron, rarely causes constipation, and is absorbed well in a low-acid environment.

325 mg ferrous sulfate only has 65 mg elemental iron.  The rest is iron salts, which is what causes constipation.  An equivalent amount of carbonyl iron is 65 mg.

Had you not been taking any iron so far?  With your iron so low, I suspect you'll need more than 65 mg elemental iron to get it up.  65 mg iron is what the ASMBS recommends starting with after RNY, if your iron level is good.

Thanks Kelly! I will have to get the carbonyl iron. I was taking a chewable multi with. Iron. I figured I needed more. I have been so exhausted. It is hard to tell because I am working all day then driving my daughter back and forth to dance til 10 at night. But I still feel better than before surgery.   kiss

I personally buy Perfect Iron by Sundown Naturals. Sometimes I have to really look for it, but seems like I find it more at walgreens and sometimes at CVS.

I live near Raleigh, NC and the only place I've found it is Food Lion. Every few months, FL will have it B1G1F,that's when we stock up.  My parents use Sundowns, I use Iron w/C from Vitalady because I take 130mg/day.

Vitron C is the best one I've heard of. No constipation and it's really good for us. My doc prescribed it when we had to get it at the hospital pharmacy only. Now you can buy it online and at other stores. Works well for us, and doesn't cause the constipation the others do - and it's got the Vitamin C wrapped up in it already so you don't have to take another C with it.
