Diabetics: how long till you didn't need any meds?

Do you consider yourself cured? Is it expected to stay under control without meds if you do not regain? How longdo you check your levels at home and do your A1C

WLS doesn't cure diabetes - it *may* put it into remission if you are lucky ...

You will always need to get an A1C done regularly (I get mine done every 6 months) but I don't test myself regularly at home unless I feel *off*.

I am able to keep mine under control (HbA1C 6.2) with Metformin and good dietary and exercise habits.   I have a normal BMI so regain/weight has nothing to do with it!

for me it was 8 months and I was on about the max dose on everything. Now nothing and great A1C.

I was off Avandia by the time I left the hospital following my rny, this was back in 2005, I believe Avandia has been off the market now for awhile due to health issues.  I know I saw a slew of late night lawyer ads about it a few years back.  I have had normal A1C since and when I test my blood sugar in the morning (which I do just to keep tabs) my blood sugar is typically in the 80's.  I will be 9 years post op in April.  But I was only diagnosed with diabetes 2 years prior to my surgery which statistically gave me an advantage of getting off and staying off my meds longer.  It can always come back and I am very RH but so far so good.

I have been off all meds but Lantes, but only take if bs is above 120., Have not had to use it in weeks. Was off as all the other by two weeks post. I still check my bs am and pm.

My husband was a year out last Friday. He had his last A1C check in Aug. He was under the diabetes rating of 6 after 90 days, but his PCP kept testing every 3 months until August and now he's considered 100% clear.

Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I had RNY on 9-30-13, off of one insulin before I left hospital, then stopped lantus on 10-12-13. I'm still on metformin. I was on three BP meds a day now down to one a day. Saw my NUT today I was down 44 pounds that includes pre-op diet. (22 pounds) So far this seems like the best decision I ever made for myself.

My blood sugar levels are COMPLETELY normal now, altho I STILL test my blood sugar every morning and still get the A1C every six months...I was told I didn't have to take Metformin anymore (I was never on insulin), altho I take one at night because it does keep your metabolism reved up...(My plastic surgeon suggested I still take it...)

My surgery was 6/7/13

Left the hospital with no more insulin, almost 6 months out now, no meds at all, A1C is almost at normal, will continue to have A1C test done per my doctor's orders, don't test at home at all anymore.
