Pregnancy post RNY

I did take a look over on the pregnancy boards but I figured I'd ask here. For those of you who had children post op how did you deal with the weight gain? Were there any RNY related complications? Did you need to take more vitamins? If you had children before RNY was the pregnancy post RNY much different? I'm asking because I went to see my doctor last week for my annual and every thing came back normal for the first time in years. Someone posted the other day about what you gained after losing weight... Well I have gained the ability to have children when my fiancé and I are ready. I could not have asked for a greater gift. :)

Looking at the weight on your ticker, you would not have to gain any weight with a pregnancy - it would be wholly possible for you to remain the same weight or even lose weight.

If you get pregnant a year or more after RNY, you should have no complications for the pregnancy from having the surgery, should continue taking the same vitamins you will be taking for the rest of your life (check you are taking 200 per RNA folic acid BEFORE getting pregnant).

You and your OB may choose to have you followed by a fetal/maternal group.   Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT have a glucose tolerance test done - it is unnecessary (you can have post prandial monitoring) and could make you and your baby sick because of Reactive Hypoglycaemia/Dumping.  I would NEVER subject myself to this, even if a doctor tried to persuade me it would be safe - No, No, No!!

I have not personally had a baby after RNY but am coming from the perspective of being a midwife (although no longer practising)

Thank you so much for the info. I feel guilty for even thinking about weight gain but I'm only human.

That's good to know about the glucose tolerance test. I don't dump but sugar just makes me feel crappy.

When the time comes I'm hoping to find a doctor or group that has experience with RNY patients although I'm not sure how realistic that's going to be around here.

Thanks again for the info!

I had my LO when I was 3 years out. I had really bad morning sickness and lost about 15lbs, I don't know if that was because of RNY or not. I did find that I could eat more and that I could eat whatever without issues. I gained maybe 30 overall. And I swear I lost it within a week if having her! All my restriction went back to normal afterwards too. She was on the small size and I got a lot of hell from the doc about her being small and not gaining enough. I should have stood up for myself more. I did endup having to do the glucose test and it was awful. I don't dump and I was so sick afterwards. I kept pushing it off and explaining to him that it would not work but he didn't listen. Than it showed I had GD (even though the fasting blood work should that I was fine) so I had to poke myself and be monitored for the last few months. My point is stand up for yourself. You are different than a normal pregnancy and at least for me they didn't seem to get that. My baby girl is a happy and healthy 4 year old. Just keep your diet in mind and stay on top of your fluids and like I said standup for yourself! Good luck and I hope all works out for you.
