Runny Nose Since RNY
Since I had surgery on Friday, I have had a runny nose. Is it surgery-related or just coincidental? I am not sure about what to take for it, if anything. It is causing me to cough a lot now, too. It really is annoying.
Hi There, Congratulations on your weight loss. The runny nose can definitely be surgically related. Mention it to your dr when you see him. I had to adjust the way I sleep to not have a junky throat in the morning. Try sleeping on your side or slightly elevated.
I tried a few allergy meds to try and dry it up but had no luck with that.
Thank you! The surgeon doesn't want a follow-up for a month. I kind of wish the surgeon would have stuck to what his manual said about a one-week follow-up. I sleep with my CPAP and I prop myself up on three pillows. I am definitely not eating too much. I am sipping slowly and being very careful. I am in the process of switching family practices so maybe I will make an appointment with the new doctor to meet him and I'll bring it up.
Thanks everyone!
It's probably from the vagus nerve being cut. A lot of us get a runny nose when we eat a little too much. It goes away. Another thing that can happen when you get full is the hiccups.

--LOVE the rock star reference. That is exactly my attitude also. Shame my reply so late from your post. My roux en y was April 2015. Was 311# now trying not to dip below 200#. I'll stick to the subject, drippy nose. Yup, me too. Had it immediately and it continues to this day. It has no correlation to what/how much I eat/drink or position I sleep or medications (you don't want to use nose spray, bad stuff). Surgeon before surgery said many experience runny nose. So, knowing that beforehand, I still chose to have this life-saving surgery. No regrets. My drippy nose comes on with no warning (a few heartbeats time) so I'm in habit of having travel size tissues in desk at work, console in car, jacket pocket ... you get the idea. My sinus is clear, I don't need to "blow," just need to wick a few drips for a couple of minutes 2 or 3 times a day. Nothing to be worried about, nothing to fix because there's nothing wrong. Interesting how tummy is connected to the nose. Anyway, party-on, Garth (another rock star reference)
