weight loss before surgery

I am at a 40.2 BMI with no obesity issues.  My insurance requires at least a BMI of 40 to have the surgery or a BMI OF 35 with weight-related problems.  My question is if I lost weight before my surgery and end up with a BMI of less than 40 could this affect my being considered for the sugery?

It would depend on your insurance company.  You should ask them.

As indicated it probably depends on your insurance.

And it could be that if you have shown a long term weight history of a BMI over 40 and that you just went below that in preparation for surgery, it might not be an issue.

But that is a question best answered by the insurance company because ultimately, they decide.  I doubt the surgeon's office would have a huge issue as long as insurance will cover it.

You may want to ask the billing folks at your surgeons office. Mine were very helpful in clarifying insurance questions I had...after the customer service reps at the insurance company were clueless.

Some go by weight at initial consultation, but I've heard of a few that deny those that lose preop. Definitely something to get clarified.

Most surgeons have staff that are very good with helping on these issues.

Thanks everyone!  I have decided to buy a scale and monitor it closely so I stay right around where I am right now.  :)  I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond to me, though.
