This could postpone or end my journey. Went to see my surgeon yesterday for results of my UGI, and was floored by the results. I have a large paraesophageal hernia which may or may not need mesh to repair. I'm schedule to have surgery to repair it on 11/7/16, with the possibility to go forth with the vsg (my choice of wls) or rny which I'm fine with if not able to do vsg. Problem is if the hernia is so large that mesh has to be use both wls are out of the question. Pretty upset right now. I worked so hard to get this far. So I'll be going into surgery not knowing what the outcome will be. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. If so please let me know how it turned out for you Thanks for your help.

No experience, just a big hug to you!

I imagine it would be torturous not knowing until after you wake up!

Hope it's the best outcome for you!!!

Hi

I did not have my hernias done at the same time as my RNY, which was three weeks ago.  But let me share my experiences with you.  Three yrs ago I had 7 abdominal hernias from prior colan surgeries.  Surgeon said they can strangulate and become very serious if not fixed.  I had open surgery with the mesh put in, and I've been fine.  Fast forward to RNY surgery 9/14.  It was again open surgery due to the mesh.  The surgery was 5 hrs long because of severe scar tissue that had formed everywhere and made it difficult to get through the mesh.  I was in the hospital 6 days.  Would I do it again, YES.

My intent is not to scare you.  Only you can decide what's right for you.  For me having been through both surgeries seperately, I would have loved the option of going in once, fix the h er nia and do the RNY at the same time.  I would caution you on the sleeve.  I have seen many people looking to revise to the RNY due to severe gerd.  This would cause you the dreaded second surgery down the road.  If it were me....I would fix the hernia and do the RNY at the same time and get on with your life.

Best of luck in your decision

Thank you so much for your reply:) Sad to say I have no choice in doing both surgeries at once. It depends on the extent of the hernia repair. Before I had the UGI I thought I had a hiatal hernia and base on that my surgeon said the rny was a better choice and that was his recommendation, but now since it is a paraesophageal hernia he feels the VSG could safely be done with minimal risk of acid reflux afterwards

So glad your doing so wonderful:) Hopefully things will work out for me too:)

Did you have trouble with acid reflux before your surgery and did you take a acid reducer before surgery? Just wondering. I have very little issues with acid reflux unless I eat greasy fried foods or spicy foods. No longer eating  foods that upset my stomach, and I don't have to take a acid reducer... Because of the type of hernia I have my surgeon feels I won't have issues with acid reflux after vsg, but I'm still concerned and have no problem with having the RNY. Definitely don't want to go through this twice!

Thank's for your reply:) appreciate it!
