Carbonation Question

i know this topic has been bounced around a lot, and I can't seem to get a handle on if it's good or bad or damaging or what, etc. My dr says one thing, NUT something different, here I get actual "field" advice.

Im almost 8 months out. Haven't had even A DROP of carbonation in that time. I'm wondering if I have a few sips now and then, am I ruining everything? Every now and then I would like to have a sip of pop or seltzer water.

I remember some of you mentioning it could be a trigger and then others saying that it wasn't a trigger for them and it would "stretch your stomach" etc. Any thoughts on this?

My thoughts... my doctor's NUT said never again... my Doc says whatever, if it doesn't bother you then you're fine... I have read time and time again that it doesn't 'hurt' your pouch on here.

I abstained, and really, still continue to simply because I was sensitive to caffeine prior to surgery, and now even a small diet Dr Pepper doesn't make me feel good.

That, and I burp like a sailor when I have had one since surgery!

I would think, that at 8 months out, it might be a bit unpleasant, but IMHO (and very new to this all even still), you wouldn't hurt anything giving it a try.

You will have to decide if it's a trigger for you or not. And you will have to decide if you can still have it and still get your water in daily.

For me, I'm satisfied 90% of the time with my flavored water. I've really only ordered/bought my own soda (always diet) a couple of times...

Carbonation won't stretch your stomach, especially for an RNY which is open at both ends. What it will do is make you uncomfortable. I have the occasional sip of my husband's carbonated drink and then I burp and shift around for five minutes. You won't ruin or break anything, but for some people, carbonated drinks like diet sodas are a slippery slope that can lead to old bad habits. Other people enjoy them without any problems. For me, I just stay away from them.

If you had a gallon a day diet pop habit before surgery, you will work back to that if you start drinking it after surgery.

It will not add calories or make you fat. It does not make me uncomfortable. I find Coke Zero a good way to fill up on zero calories.

I don't currently do it because the caffeine makes me nervous, but it would be easy to start up again.

It won't harm you. If it makes you uncomfortable, stop. If it makes you crave real sugar, or eat more of anything, stop.

I drink over 200 ounces of diet soda pretty much every day. It works for me. Someone else's mileage may vary.

I want to drink soda again because sometimes I am looking for a drink besides water and coffee. After 2 years I finally feel like I can grab up to about 5 sips off of my boyfriend's soda (if it is flat), but I can't handle more than that. It actually burns a little in my esophagus and my whole pouch just feels bloated for a few hours. It's not painful, but it doesn't good, either. I'll stick with water.

Pop/Soda has never been an issue for me and I don't plan to add it back. I do love sparkling water though, but I think I will wait until I'm a year out to give it a try.
