Keto diet after Gastric Bypass, is is possible or not?

In my pre-op phase (for 1 year) I followed a keto diet of low carb, high fat, moderate protein and lost about 80 lbs. I really enjoyed it as it really helped with my type II diabetes and I was able to lower my insulin intake. I am 6 weeks post op and have spent a lot of time thinking about the feasibility of following that same diet plan after having gastric bypass.

Has anyone had RNY and been successful at losing weight using a keto LCHF diet? If so, what can you tell me about the macros you use (amount of protein, carbs, and fat). I would love to hear everyone's take on this as I really want to get off of my insulin, after RNY surgery I am still on 25 units twice a day of long lasting and about 30 units of fast acting.

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!

Keto diet would be great after WLS. But while you are still so newly postop and eating few calories, you should emphasize protein. As a rule of thumb, low carb, make sure you are getting at least 10 grams of protein for every 100 calories (twice as much is better), and don't worry about fat.

Fat is best for diabetes, but you need to be sure you are getting enough protein during weight loss for healing, and to preserve muscle mass on a VLCD.

HI,

Wanted to point out that in the first couple of months you may want to consider doing keto but not high fat as this may may you sick from all the fat and upset your micro egg sized tummy. I am doing keto low fat. Not sure how my stomach would feel eating hi fat protein at this stage.

I know that before RNY, I had the sleeve for 9 years and the first few months, I was in tears and running to the bathroom with any high fat proteins. Now with the RNY, not sure at what point I will add the higher fat high proteins.

Do you mind sharing with me how many carbs, fat and protein you are taking in a day? Thanks

HI ,

I am a revision who is one month post op. I am eating less than 15 carbs a day at this point, eating mostly ground lean turkey or chicken, tuna, yogurt, lf cheese, egg beaters, tilapia mushed. I ate a couple tb of baked potato here and there, mixed with lf sour cream. I subsidize with one protein shake.

I average 75-85 grams protein, 70 ounces liquids, but I don't count the fat because everything I am eating is low fat. However, once my new tummy gets used to fat, I plan on eating more of it. Right now, I am still healing and my stomach is very sensitive to new foods.

I am 3.5 years out, lost over 200 lbs, and am currently maintaining.

I was an insulin dependent diabetic: 2 injections of medium acting, 1 to 3 injections/boluses for rapid acting with 2000 mg of metformin in addition. I am completely off of meds for diabetes and maintain an A1c of 4.8 or lower.

I have not yet had regain.

I have eaten LC from day one -- KETO for the past three. My macros are 80-115/20-30/75 and under 950 calories.

I hope that helps.

Thank you for your response!! And congrats on your weight loss...

I want to make sure I understand your macros correctly: 80-115 carbs, 20-30 fats, and 75 protein? Is this correct?

You're welcome -- and thank you.

No, that's not correct. I followed your pattern in your original post: protein, carbs, and fat.

Thus, my macros in maintenance are:

80 to 115 Protein

20 to 30 Carbs

75 Fats

950 or fewer calories.
