Stomach bug

I got sick with a stomach bug on Saturday and it seems like it's taking me forever to get over it. I'm nearly 1.5 years out and this is the first stomach bug I've had. I start feeling a little better and I get hungry so I eat. Just now I ate an ounce of pork and some olive oil with lettuce. After I eat I start feeling sick again, shaky and hot and nauseous.

Has anyone had trouble getting over the stomach flu post op? I'd thought I was having blood sugar issues initially but then had diarrhea and slept for two days.

Traveling to South America has afforded me some valuable lessons when it comes to serious GI illness. Dense protein is not good for a mending GI tract.

Can I ask what did help you? Thanks for the insight on dense protein. It does seem to be what is making me feel so bad.

My mother in law would make me something like a very light chicken broth & rice soup. I also ate crackers and some mashed banana or apple. Basically I ate like a baby. And lots of fluids. You want to rest your GI tract. That means eating soft easily digestible foods. The stuff we're not really supposed to eat.

Maybe some chicken broth? I've not dealt with it since surgery, but in my family chicken soup is good for all that ails you... Might even try throwing scrambled egg into it (egg drop soup) to up your protein while still trying to stay lower carb.

Pork might be harder to digest?

Hope you get to feeling better soon

Can you believe we'll be 1.5 years out in just a few days??! How'd that happen???

I'm going to try soft foods today. No meat.

Yes, 1.5 years. It's gone fast!

No advice here. I am so sorry. I hate the dry heaving (instead of barfing) part of stomach bugs post RNY.

Sometimes a good barf just makes one feel better!

I just got over a TERRIBLE stomach bug. I ended up needing antibiotics for about 5 days. Stomach bugs seem to affect me much more greatly since surgery. All I ate safely for about a week was mashed potatoes and oatmeal with bananas (and even that still made me feel funny.) Best of luck!

Yes, this feels much worse than preop. This feels like it should have been a 24 hour bug but keeps hanging on. In fact, the people at work who have it did get over it in 24 hours. Apparently my altered digestive system is taking this hard!

I usually go to liquid protein (hot or cold - powder or ready to drink). I also mix whey isolate protein powder into yogurt or sugar free pudding. It's all easy to digest and you can get your protein in at the same time until your pouch is ready for solid food.

Also get in plenty of fluid - water, hot tea, etc.

Best wishes.
