my wife wants chickens too.  I keep telling her they are messy and will eat all of the plants in the garden.  I'm afraid I'll be building a coop next.  Oh man I hope not!

You definitely have to fence them out of the garden.  I fence the garden and let the chickens free range.  Next plan is to put a rail and gate around the front porch so we can put furniture and actually sit out there and enjoy it.  Right now, if we had furniture, they'd get on it and poo.  But they're TONS of fun.  We watch them like we watch television.  They're awesome.  And you just can't beat the eggs...and the added benefit of having 5 wooded acres w/ NO ticks!

Chickens eat a lot of bugs to.And they are a good security system.

You are so lucky to have your own greenhouse!  I'm envious of all the fresh vegetables you'll produce.  I wish we had the room for one.

Thank you!  For years we got by with a small garden and were sad when it was dead so we were pretty excited about doing this.  It started like every other good plan....drunk.  I said sure I can build one of those.  The next day my wife was like so....um when are you going to get started, I'm like on what?  Next day construction began lol.

Very inspiring as we inch ever closer to the first official day of Spring...but all I can see out my classroom window is snow...snow...and more snow! It was so cold here this morning...-19 C that we stayed in for morning recess. It was great to log on here and see your pics.

Connected...but off OH topic as well...I am pairing up with the local highschool greenhouse project and will be getting some fancy indoor grow station apparently ordered from Italy. The HS teacher will be taking my Grade Ones through his operation at the school and then we will be the guinea pigs for his pilot elementary school program. I am really stoked..but not very "green thumb" so I am worried.

The hilarious twist is that the lights we are getting on this grow station are actually "grow op" lights that were confiscated by the local police in a raid just after Christmas. Classic! :-)

150 pounds gone for now! :-)  Initial goal weight of 170 lbs met on March 7, 2014.  My 44 year old bones survived hiking 4 days overland to a highest point of 4700 metres! Machu Picchu goal...CONQUERED!

too funny about the lights, but this post is really great.  1st.  Police reusing the lights for something good is awesome.  2.  I have been a longtime critic of the classroom curriculum of reading, writing, math, history etc.  basically the same curricula since the humanities era I am VERY glad to see the students get an opportunity to do this.  You would think that growing food would be more of an agenda than it is.  Thanks for sharing that!

That is awesome... I keep telling myself I want to do a garden, but with all the great farmer's markets here, well, it seems easier to have the professionals provide me with great food :)

you're right.  when the farmers markets are in season it's actually cheaper to go buy fresh tomatoes and veggies there.  we've learned through the years that the gardens aren't about saving money lol but its a good hobby with a little payback and something healthier to spend time doing!  She works from home so it is a little more manageable than getting home and having to take care of it everyday at least.

We're blessed here in Minneapolis with both the traditional "Norwegian Bachelor Farmers" of Garrison Keillor fame AND a new breed of family farmers from Vietnam and Laos that migrated to the Twin Cities in the 70s and 80s and grow the most beautiful produce I've ever seen.
