The number does matter. I think I worry more about changes I need to make so when I get to goal I will stay there. I would focus on your plan that your doctor gave you and work on the bad habits that need to be changed. The weight does come off. When I became frustrated I look at the NSVs I have not just the scale. 

This is totally a life changing experience this isn't a diet it is a new lifestyle.

I would up your calories a little.  Calories aren't really what you should be looking at anyway. Protien and low carbs. 

Also, I wouldn't go overboard with the exercise. Some cardio and some strength training.  Your body is still healing.
