Zumba

Our Zumba group is a mix of experienced folks and newbies, so nobody is ever really doing the "right" moves simultaneously.  There are two leaders, and sometimes THEY'RE doing two different things (they were originally paired with other partners).

They only expect us to give it our best shot, and we do. Some of us can't jump, and one lady has limited arm movement. They know this, and often show us 'modified" moves. They also watch to make sure we're not getting frustrated, and come out into the group with us.  We laugh when we screw up, and keep going.

As long as we keep moving? It's good. I am ridiculously uncoordinated, but I still go twice a week. YMMV

I love Zumba.  I look like an uncoordinated fool, but everyone else is too worried about how THEY look to notice me :)

Congratulations!

I love Zumba....and I hate dancing...

You don't have to do the arm moves and you can make it as difficult or as easy as you'd like.  Also, try different instructors!  They are all so different and you might find you like certain classes way more than others.

It took me about 2 months before I could sort of follow the Zumba instructor, and I still goof up a lot after 6 months, but it is fun and it gets you moving. And usually there is someone a little newer who is just learning making me feel like I am kind of getting it!

Yup it's fun and all that but be mindful of your joints etc.  I tried 1 class and was out for 3 weeks with injury.  You don't get enough time to properly set your body up for a move. I engage in fierce swimming, weight training, easy & medium yoga.  I want to be in the game for the long haul.

Just be mindful of your parts

I was also going to suggest Zumba Gold, as another poster did.  Or there's Aqua Zumba (obviously, zumba done in the pool).  I do the Aqua version because of my crappy joints - I can't bounce up and down too much on dry land.  There's a real mix of ages in the pool version (or at least mine) - including a few 70+ folks.   And yes - those people who know the routine have been going for a long time and memorize it.  Even in the pool, we have some folks going left and a couple of others going right.  As long as you keep moving, don't worry about it.  No one cares.  It's just fun - and a good workout to boot!
