1 - it's still being in the "food = reward" mentality, which is a bad mentality to keep yourself in. Try to find other things to reward yourself with.

2 - sushi rice is made with sugar, this makes it a less optimal choice if you want to reach your goal.

Small aside... but sushi rice should NOT contain sugar. It is short grain white or brown rice (hence it is more sticky) and Rice Vinegar. But no sugar is used. The sticky comes from the nature of the rice grain.

Google and most sushi recipes I've seen disagrees with you.

When in doubt, ask the sushi chef.

Traditional sushi is made with rice wine vinegar which is higher in sugar, actually. 15ml has about 15g of carbs, depending on brand. It is added after fermentation.

Almost all Japanese food has added sugar, sadly. Not as much as Western food to be sure, however the vinegar in sushi absolutely does have it.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

It isn't a "bad" food but it also is not a "good" food. Re-read your first post. You already said you can eat more of it than you can of other foods, that is basically the definition of a bad food. You are what? A year post op?

The further you get from surgery the more you can eat. If you start down a path with sliders, it is really hard to crawl out.

Be mindful.

I personally think if you are within your calorie and carb limit (if you limit yourself) then I don't think sushi is bad, but if you are low carb then it would be almost impossible to fit normal sushi within your limits. Plus, the thought of eating rice makes me stomach feel tight already. Why not try to order your sushi without rice, or better yet, make it! I found this http://www.makesushi.com/sushi-roll-without-sushi-rice/ online and it looks delicious.

But its not that bad food. Im not eating desert or junky food.

rice turns into pure sugar as soon as it hits your mouth and digestion starts. You might as well eat a candy bar.

As long as there is free flowing sugar in your blood stream, your body will not break down stored fat for energy, so weight loss will be slower/ stop.

A know "feature" of rice is that it continues to adsorb water and expand. It continues to do so even when it so much water that the rice is mush.

So a problem with sushi (versus sushimi) is that you can eat a lot of su****hen have a drink liquids, even 30 minutes later and have the water be absorbed by the rice and SWELL! To the Orientals this is a feature. It is why you are given soup first, so that you will have liquids in your stomach to cause the rice to swell. Hence you need less food!

A balance I found (yes I am pre surgery) is to have mostly sushimi and then 1 maki and my desert (which I KNOW is high sugar) is eel nigiri. My husband and will treat ourselves to "sushi" and we will order 3 or 4 varietys of sushimi (the usual is Tuna, Yellow Tail, Salmon, and Sea Bass) then a maki which we split and an order of eel nigiri. If I eat more rice than that then I feel over full, and that is now with my fat body stomach.

So if you are like I am and "sushi" is the generic term for all forms of Japanese raw fish (and as-sundries) then some now and again seems like it should be fine. But beware of rice of any form as it will expand on you.

I now eat sashimi... they usually have an appetizer selection of assorted sashimi. That makes me happy.

I haven't had any sushi since surgery.

I can't say I miss it if I can have the sashimi/ginger/wasabi, then I find myself very satisfied!

I've eaten some edamame as an appetizer prior to, as well...
