No Drinking 30 Minutes Before or After Eating

I should probably know this, but I don't. What is the reason we cannot drink for 30 minutes before or after eating? I understand why we should not drink when we eat because we want to fill our stomach with protein first and veggies next, but I do not have a clear understanding of the before and after.

Thanks in advance

Some Drs. say 30 minutes are others say 60 minutes.  From what I've read it's to keep from filling you up before hand and not washing it out afterwards.

I think mine was 30 before and 60 after in the beginning.  but no matter, I think it is the end part that is the most important.  You don't have a spinkter (sp) anymore if you have an RNY.  Which means that fluid in will wash everything out and you will be hungry again sooner.  Also, you need to let that food sit in your stomach as long as it will so that it can digest.  You now have a much smaller stomach and less intestine to digest your food.  You need to let the process go on as long as it will.  We malabsorb after surgery anyway, we need to get as much of the good stuff from what we eat as possible.

I am 4 yrs out.  I will drink right up to when I eat but try to wait at least an hour before drinking again.  I never had a hard time with it because I grew up in a house with no liquid on the table.  Granddaddy was a dr and he thought you shouldn't "wash down your food".

I had the VSG. My doc says 15 minute wait before eating and 30 minute wait after eating. I really do stick to it.
