Getting Started

Feb 01, 2013

I started this journey last May by going to a monthly seminar by the surgeon at my hospital. 8 months, several psychologist, nutritionist, and exercise physiologist appointments later, I am finally nearing the end of the beginning of my journey.

I had my final pre-op visit with my surgeon on Thursday. I started my modified liquid diet yesterday evening. Today was my first full day. I am allowed one small, low calorie, low fat meal per day. I am to have protein shakes for the other two meals and may have low cal, sugar free, clear and full liquids in between. This is for week one. Week two I will cut out the daily "normal" meal and go to three protein shakes daily. I am dealing with a lot of head hunger at this point. I've not been tempted at all to cheat, as I know that this is only for two weeks and is in preparation for the surgery I have been working toward for months. It just feels like there is an empty pit in my stomach. I guess when you are used to stuffing yourself, there isn't enough chicken broth in the world to fill that void! As a friend used to tell me, "You are not actually going to starve to death." It's very true. If I had enough water to drink, my fat stores would probably last me for quite a while! My surgeon said if you can make it past the first two days, "the rest is cake." Yes, those were his exact words... wonder if he sees the irony there. So, I am trying to stay positive and looking forward to February 13th!
