Healthy food choices

Oct 01, 2010

All of us know the foods that aren't healthy.  A lot is written about them.  The foods (or fake foods) that pack on the calories, thus pounds, and then we're hungry a few minutes later.  Whenever I run across some good information on the nutrition or benefits to eating a particular food fave of mine, I note it down to compile a list.  Here are some that really tend to fill me up and are packed with nutrition but not empty calories.  As I opened up a container of cottage cheese, I decided to share some of those food choices here with you.  Here are some of my very favorites:

1.  Bananas -A small banana contains lots of potassium and is soooo filling.  When I workout, I used to get very nauseated.  Now I eat 1/2 of a banana and I don't get nauseated.  Plus potassium is great for your blood pressure.  If you eat anything salty, you should counteract the effect with a food containing potassium.

2.  Ice Water - I don't snack or even graze when I carry a bottle of iced water around with me.  If I go to a meeting or an appointment, I bring my bottle of ice water.  As I work, I always have a huge mug of iced water next to me.  On the weekends, wherever we go, it is my hubby, my boys and me with my bottle of ice water.  It helps everything from weight loss, weight maintenance, prevent as much snacking/grazing, good for our skin, and even curbs hunger.  Many times we interpret being hungry but we really are thirsty.  I've stopped many a craving just by drinking up!  If you see me, there is about 99% I'll have my water bottle with me.

3.  Cottage Cheese  - For years, I hated cottage cheese yet had never eaten it!  Yep, that's right, never even tasted it.  I didn't like to look of it and didn't like the name.  Is that hilarious or what?  About three years ago, I had a procedure that required me to eat bland, soft foods.  Out of sheer desperation, I tried cottage cheese and I LOVE it.  Since then, I eat cottage cheese almost every day.  It is packed with a fantastic balance of protein, carbs and fat, and great on its own or mixed with other foods such as fruit for dessert!

4.  Yogurt - I like Greek yogurt but with so many varieties of yogurt to choose from, it's right up there in the wonder food category. If you are seriously watching calories, there is a fat free/sugar free version and it is as thick and creamy as the full fat varieties. If you don't want artificial sweeteners added, it is really easy to buy the plain unflavored tubs and then add your own fruit. Problem solved. Try to find ones that contain active culture however.

5.  Silver Creek Specialty Meats - I discovered this "jerky" from talking with another OH member.  My favorite is chicken breast with mango and papaya.  They are strips of protein (beef or chicken - I LOVE chicken) that are 50 calories and individually wrapped.  I always have a few in my purse so I'm prepared.  Do a search on Silver Creek Specialty Meats and you can find them.  They are pretty pricey but so are Krispy Kreme donuts - both in price and calories!
