Decisions, decisions...

Jul 25, 2011

I'm about 95% sure that I want to have surgery...I still waiver on a few things here and there, which are all pretty much my own hang ups.  I used to be very against surgery because I (like many people) assumed it to be the *easy way out* for a long time, but after knowing more and more people who have gone through it and researching it much more I now realize it's just as hard (if not harder) as doing it on your own.  Granted, I realize that there are people who are going to be successful at it and those who will not be (I know both types), because it IS a tool, not something that is just going to magically work (and those I know that it hasn't worked for were the ones who assumed it was the easy way out and weren't willing to put in the hard work to make it work for them).

So after being obese on and off throughout my life, morbidly obese for a good portion of my life, and now super morbidly obese for a third of my life I'm starting to realize that maybe I do really need to utilize this tool for myself.  Yes, I guess you could say I've been somewhat successful on my own, but in the grand scheme of things, not really.  Yes, I've been more successful in one aspect more than others because I was able to get down 220 pounds on my own, but ultimately I put it back on.  I'm really good at getting to 100 - 150 pounds lost on my own and then putting it all back in a very quick, scary manner.  I'm not sure why my body is so good at gaining weight quickly in such a short amount of time, but after being at this for a good five years I think it's time for me to look at other options.  So that leads me here...to thinking about surgery for myself.

I know my insurance covers weight loss surgery as long as I go to a program in my network and go to a Center of Excellence, so on July 5th I turned in my paperwork to the hospital (where if I decide this is the route for me to go i will be using)..  They called me on July 13th to say that they received my packet and they were turning it over to their Program Director to review and I would hear back from them by the next Friday.  That Friday she called me to tell me that my insurance will cover surgery (which I already knew) and that now they were requesting medical records, which she would get to them and I would hear back from them.  I didn't hear anything from them last week, which has me a bit nervous, but I'll give it a few more days and call and check up.  Really I just want to get in and talk to someone.  Yes, I can read all I want on the internet, but it's not the same as actually talking to them about it.

My big decision is whether or not I want to do Lap Band or VSG.  At first I didn't think my hospital did the VSG, but now I see it listed on their website (which is another reason I want to talk to them to make sure they do it, because that is my number one chioce), but if they do not, then I'm going to try for the Lap Band.  I fear I may be too heavy for the Lap Band, but I really don't want to re-arrange my intestines, so that's why I would choose that over gastric bypass.

If you're reading this and want to chime in, I'd be more than happy to hear your experience.  Which surgery you choose and why and how it's working out for you.  I really hate making decisions, but I know this is one I may have to make, if I want my life back.  The waiting game really sucks...
