Pre-op predicament...

Jan 10, 2010

Well, it came time to start the pre-op diet last wednesday and by the next day I encountered a problem!!! I have been prescribed to take the Meditrim supplements for 2 weeks. When I recieved them I noticed that they are sweetened with sucralose. This is the same stuff Splenda is made of, and the same stuff that makes me violently ill  (stomach cramps, bloating, gas, and diarhea).  I am able to have something like a yogurt with some in it and no issues, and I wasn't sure how much was in the product, so I thought I wouls give it a try. After all I had already paid for it and had it shipped.

Well...No Meditrim for me anymore!!! I was worried this would happen. Thank goodness I still had friday to call the NUT and explain. Another product (most on this site speak of) Optifast, is sweetened with aspertame. Only problem is I would have to wait for a new order to come in the mail. Luckily I got an order in for monday or tuesday, and they have agreed to refund me for the unopened boxes of Meditrim that I return . So, until the new stuff arrives I am stuck with Slim Fast, and it is sicky sweet and a little chalky. I do add extra protein powder to it so it is closer to the others, and I'm surviving.

I knew this wasn't going to be easy, but this isn't what I had in mind. Although getting to the ketosis stage with little hunger pains was faster and easier as I couldn't take most of the first formula.

I have also been looking ahead for some healthy recipes to try for when the band has healed. Unfortunately, a lot of the low carb, low sugar ones are made with Splenda. There was another product called Whey Less, but it's only available online and with the shipping to Canada it would cost three times more. Argghhhh!!! I am proud to be Canadian, but sometimes if feels like everything has to be shipped from the US.

So, I will have to just live with low fat options and use real sugar in recipes. Even still, it will be healthier than not changing any eating habbits.

Hmm, I didn't realize I was going to write such a long post. I guess part of it is to keep my hands and mind busy and to not think about food. My poor puppy is wondering why there are no table scraps for him!!!
