I got a new Kidney!!!

Aug 30, 2012

It is amazing how things can turn around so quickly!!!  August 1st, I got "the" call and then the morning of August 2nd I got my "new" kidney at UW Hospital--Madison, WI.  The same hospital in January 2010 where I got my bariatric surgery.  I no longer feel heart broken.  I feel at peace with the break up.  My ex still contacts me and we have remained friends.  I lost 5 pounds post transplant.  And I am maintaining my weight as I heal from surgery.  I still have a goal in mind but I am only 30 pounds away and may need to reevaluate that goal.  From the start of my journey I have lost 97 pounds and I have maintained it!!!

I see the bariatric Nutritionist next Tuesday.  I have some new challenges with the post transplant diet and for the first time in
my life I was put on insulin because of the Prednisone that I have to take now.

I am also bipolar (no major episodes or hospitalizations for over a decade) (well maintained on medication and therapy) and
there was a contraindication with one of the kidney meds, Tacrolimus and my tried and true psych med, Geodon.  So one of my doctor's associates switched me to Abilify for a week and I was allergic to it.  I am back on the Geodon but I may have to have regular ECG's

The good news is that my surgeon is lowering my dose of Prednisone very rapidly over the next few weeks from 30 mg to 10 mg.  I may be able to get off the insulin.
