"For me, it all comes down to the nursing staff. I was very happy with the nurse in peri-op, the nurse in pre and post op and the overnight nurse on the floor. On the other hand, the day nurse on the floor was a complete flake. She did not know how to use the bed, and so when she went to help me up for the first time, put me into a "crunch" position - great when you've just had abdominal surgery. She was not responsive when I asked for pain medication on schedule. I once waited for 55 minutes and once for over an hour and a half! Each time I had requested the meds at the time I was due, not early. Each time she ran in much, much later and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't forget you but..." There was one time when I had to wait to go to the restroom for half an hour and 3 calls. I had been unplugging my IV myself and going whenever I needed to, but the nurse had plugged it in behind the bed and I couldn't get to it. The hospital encourages you to have an adult stay with you but we couldn't because our family is out of the area and we have young children. I thought the suggestion was just for my comfort, but after my stay, it is clear that they expect your comfort person to be your care person."
