I am a 52 year old man who has struggled with weight off and on since I was 22 and blew out my right knee. Before that, I was very active in most sports, so while still overweight by current BMI standards, I was lean and fit. I recently found a picture of myself at 18, when I weighed 185 and had a 28 inch waist. When I do the BMI calculation, it comes out as a 29, but I was very strong and healthy.
After destroying my knee, I was not able to participate in sports like before, but my food intake didn't drop. My body composition began to change, and fat replaced muscle. I was always able to lose the weight pretty quickly, but put it back on with extra a short time later.
Now I am an old fart, and I can't lose the weigh by myself. I need help to learn the good eating habits that I should have adopted years ago. I have requested WLS from Kaiser several times over the last 5 years, but they always tell me that even though I meet their requirements, I do not look fat enough to warrant the surgery. It seems that if you do not carry all of your weight in your belly, you are not reall fat.
I have decided to go the self pay route. I took inspiration from the son on Pawn Stars. According to the show, he put his surgery on 4 credit cards, so I started looking into how much it would cost. I was pleasantly surprised, and now I have an appointment in September.
