2 weeks post-op

May 27, 2010

So Tuesday was 2 weeks since I was sleeved and it hasn't been all that bad. The hardest part is changing my eating habits; have to slow down drastically and can't drink when i eat anymore. I used to inhale my food like someone was going to steal it from me; I think part of that is from when I was in the military and some from working on the ambulance, always having to rush. Now though, I have to take a bite or two and then stop, breath, wait, before I can take another bit; as well as chewing everything thoroughly. I never chewed my food very well either, I'd pop whatever in my mouth chew once or twice and swallow. Now I take a bite and savor the flavor and chew basically until its mush and then swallow.  If I go too fast or don't chew enough, I can tell immediately  with that uncomfortable tight feeling. The other thing is drinking when I eat, I used to drink about 3 glasses of sweet tea or diet coke with every meal. Now I can't drink at all, big change!
So the not being able to eat solids hasn't bothered me as much as the mental aspects listed above. But being 2 weeks post-op the jello and broth are getting very old, don't get me wrong. They also just go so fast, now that the swelling is down. I've started incorporating some mushies; like beans, smoothies, and applesauce.
Went out to eat for the first time last friday too. We went to Chilis and I had black beans and rice. It went down really well, only had like 3 or 4 bites, and I felt comfortable and full the rest of the night.
So I guess thats it so far.

Today's the day

May 11, 2010

Well i'm sitting here in my room waiting to go back for surgery. So far this morning I have meet Dr. Alavarez and his staff and everyone has been very nice and helpful, very welcoming and personable. I'm feel very relaxed and at ease despite being in Mexico and about to have my first surgery ever. The hospital is very nice, looks old but updated the room is very nice. They are here to do my IV and stuff and I'll post more after.

It's got to start somewhere.

So I went to a "seminar" here in August to try and get have the surgery done, but it turns out my insurance doesn't cover the surgery. No surprise there. So since I will be paying out of my pocket I started looking at Dr. Alvarez in Mexico. So far I haven't heard anything negative about anyone going down there for surgery and have got lots of positive feed back. Today I filled out my health history questionnaire and applied for financing.  I'm hoping to have the surgery in early to mid May, I guess I'll update as soon as I find out something.
