Hello Everyone, I hope everyone who is thinking about bariatric surgery will read this and make sure they understand the risk of an elective surgery.  My Journey started April 28, 2011 with my sister at DMC in Detroit Michigan.  We had studied many hospitals and Dr's before we decided where to go.  First and foremost if you are thinking of going to Mexico don't take the chance.  My surgeon is Dr. Michael Wood.  He has done more than 5,000 surgeries in bariatrics.  When you go to your consultation make sure you understand the risk.  My sister and I went into surgery 2 hours apart.  Hers went well and mine did too.  That same night I had a set back.  I went to goto the bathroom at  2am and thats the last thing I remember.  I coded and luckly my husband was in the room with me cuz if he wasnt I dont think I would be here.  My blood sugar went to 600 and I lost 2 pints of blood (10 units) I was in ICU for 7 days and I am still in the hospital now (5-19-11) I lost full function of my kidneys and suffered some damage to my liver.  Everything has now came back, but my kidneys are still recovering.  There is less than a 1% risk of this happening and ufortunatly I was a part of that 1%.  I am supossed to be diischarged tomorrow and be able to start my journey at home.  If you ask me now I would tell you it wasnt worth it.  I would have never thought it would happen with such a low percentage.  They say the benifits outway the risk, but I am not so sure at this point.  I thank god everyday for everything.  I am so glad I am ok.  Dr. Michael Wood is an excellent surgeon and when all the Dr's said theres nothing we can do she is not stable enough to go back into surgery he thought different.  He said he would feel like he didnt try if he didnt go back and here I am today to tell you my story.  My husband spent every day and night with me in ICU and my regular room.  My sister stayed in guest housing.  Dr. Michael Wood comes sees me everyday and he is so happy to see me ok.  I will keep this updated as my progress moves on.  I hope evryone that decides to have this surgery will understand that there is ALWAYS that risk.
