Two Weeks to Go

Aug 07, 2011

After seeing a psychologist, nutritionist, my primary care physician, a gastroenterologist, and of course my bariatric surgeon I have been approved to have gastric bypass surgery on August 17th. This has been a very easy decision for me to make and I am very excited about my choice, however now that I have a date and this is definitely going to happen, I am getting nervous. I am trying to push those nerves out of the way because I know this is a decision that is going to change my life for the better. I am very grateful because all of my friends have been very supportive of my choice and have offered me nothing but support.

So what is gastric bypass? Well it is a procedure that makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. I will be having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which means instead of opening up my stomach, the surgery will be done laparoscopically, with my surgeon using a camera to guide the surgery. Having the surgery done laparoscopically will enable me to have a quicker recovery, which is great, because I will be heading back to school exactly two weeks after the surgery.

Having to return to school was my biggest concern, however after meeting with my surgeon on Monday, I have been assured that I will be ready for classes when I return. My doctor believes that, because I don’t have any health issues and I am young, I will be mobile after the first week. I truly hope this is the case, so after my surgery I will be do everything in my power, to ensure my mobility after week one. This just basically means that immediately following surgery, I will have to walk as much as possible. Although it is going to be painful walking immediately following surgery is one of the key components to faster healing.
