My story is typical. I'm 46 years old. My mother is heavy, my grandmother was heavy, my daughter is now heavy (sorry girly) so you get the idea. I was a normal size kid but by the time I was twenty, I had already begun to gain weight. For the next 25 years I yo-yo dieted, losing twenty or thirty pounds and gaining it all back plus a few extra pounds. By the time I was 45, I was 231 pounds, a size 3x and going up. Although my weight was causing health problems, I was terrified of WLS. When I finally found the courage to ask my PCP about it, he said, "I wouldn't recommend it to most people but in your case, I think its a good idea." I felt relief that he would approve me and "OMG I must be in bad shape" all at the same time. Over the next year and a half, I explored WLS still scared but always hopeful. When the time came that my bariatric clinic thought I was ready for surgery, my insurance approved it on the first try. I was ready to fight the insurance company. Instead I had to get myself ready to actually have major surgery. I was terrified but committed. I have no regrets and I would do it again today.
