My Five Year Anniversary!

Jul 26, 2016

I had my gastric sleeve done 5 years ago, July 18th,, 2011.  It is still working for me!  But, weight can come on if I eat too many carbs or sliders.  I still can't eat very much meat, noodles, rice or bread at a sitting so I tend to avoid them.  I love meat, though, so I try to get some in once daily and eat slowly.  It is tough to get enough protein some days, but I will have protein drinks occasionally to heIp.  I drink a lot of water and I love fruit.  I try to eat salads and veggies often, too.  Carbs such as popcorn or crackers can be dangerous because they are sliders and I can hardly feel them in my stomach, whereas meat fills me up with about 5-6 bites.  Every one I know who has been sleeved or had a bypass has gained some weight back.  I got as low as 134 from 217, but I've crept up to 147 and I tend to stay there.  I have absolutely no regrets getting my sleeve!  The one health change I got after my sleeve was hypoglycemia.  If I eat certain high-fructose carbs such as (Mike and Ike) my blood sugar jumps up and then drops very low within an hour.  It's a horrible feeling so I try very hard to avoid sugar.

I had my sleeve done in Mexicali from Dr. Aceves, who was wonderful.  Sadly, he died in a private plane crash a few years ago.

If you are on the fence about having a sleeve, do it!  Just remember that it is not a free ticket to forever thinness...you need to eat the right foods or you WILL gain weight back.

149 lbs.....YES!

Dec 18, 2011

So the scale was good to me today!  I am at my 5-month anniversary today from gastric sleeve surgery and I've lost an amazing 68 lbs.!  I am 3 lbs. away from my wedding weight 21 years ago and 4 lbs. from a normal BMI at 145!  I am so excited!  I love buying and wearing clothes now.  I don't like how my skin looks under the clothes, but maybe in time I will have some plastic surgery done.  It is mostly my inner thighs, bottom and waist that have loose skin that looks like it belongs to a very old person....My boobs also hang badly so they could use some help, for sure!  Dr. Sauceda may be in my future...!
I still need to be careful to chew thoroughly and eat slowly, especially dense foods like meat.  I've had food come back up a few times recently and it is a good reminder.  I have kept track of every bite I've eaten during the last 5 months on Spark People.  I average 700-1000 calories a day now.  I've been lazy with exercise the past few weeks so I need to get focused on that again after Christmas.  Life is very busy and hectic right now.
Overall, I am so grateful to have gotten the sleeve done...WOW!  I am just so happy with it!  It has saved my life and improved my outlook immensely!

My Journey Begins!

Jun 29, 2011

I have watched several friends have success with WLS and I did not ever think I would be a candidate because my BMI does not meet insurance standards for approval.  Hearing about others going to Mexico and having successful surgeries got me thinking about the possibility of me actually having it done.  Researching procedures, doctors, timeframes, work leave (I am a labor and delivery nurse), etc. I have chosen Dr. Aceves in Mexico to do a gastric sleeve on July 18, 2011.  My sister is able to come with me and my husband is off that week to take care of our puppies (I am a labradoodle breeder), and I am mentally ready to do this!  I paid my deposit and I have bought books to read to further my knowledge about the gastric sleeve and my new way of eating forever.  I am excited, scared a little, and still can't quite believe I am possibly going to look and feel better in the near future...!
