Wow. It seems a bit daunting to have to recount your life's story in a paragraph, doesn't it? My story is that I've been overweight my entire life. Due to the fact that I am a very strong willed person I appear to be a very happy and have many amazing memories and it wasn't until I sat down and really pondered having this surgery did I realize how miserable my weight has made me.
I can honestly say that I am a very successful person in the fact that I have a wonderful family, wonderful friends, am a college graduate, have an awesome job, yet something is and always has been missing. The one area that I have never seemed to be able to control is my weight.
I am 29 years old and do not wish to live another year like this. I want to be a healthy and happier person. I realize that having this surgery is not going to instantly make me happy, however it is going to help me bring out the true person inside of me. I'm sick of having twenty close guy friends who think I'm "amazing, awesome, so much fun to be around" but never good enough for them to date.
I've found that making the decision to have this surgery has been a very empowering one. I have three slipped discs in my lower back and with the suggestion of my orthopedic surgeon contemplated this surgery. I chose to tell several close friends of my decision and was shocked and hurt by some of their reactions. I found that the friends who were the most negative and least supportive were the friends who have never had to battle with their weight and at their "fattest" were maybe a size 8 in college. If I hear from one more person that "I can't possibly be 100lbs overweight" or "can't you just hire a personal trainer" I think I'm going to scream!
It is because of this website that I will be strong enough to have this surgery and be successful afterwards! My surgery is scheduled for 30 April 2007 at Naval Medical Center San Diego with Dr. Grove and I am very anxious for it to get here.
I look forward to meeting many of you and sharing our stories. I know I always have a bazillion questions!
