good month

Mar 10, 2008

I have had a good month.
I am down to 3 vancomycin pills per day instead of 4.
The SCD diet with modifications is working well for me.
I will post more later, but it looks like things are going well.

a few good days : )

Jan 04, 2008

I am now on vancomycin for about the last month and I have had a few good days. I am hoping things are turning around for me.

a very unhappy hobbit

Dec 08, 2007

I have had recurrent short bowel bacterial overgrowth causing unmanageable DHR and gas for almost a year now.
I have consulted with 3 gastro docs, my own surgeon, and some other doctors.
Medications tried: creon, flagyl, cipro, lomitil, prescription probiotics
Currently still following the specific carbohydrate diet designed for crohn's patients to reduce bad bacteria / eliminated all dairy. On flagyl and cipro and they have greatly reduced efficacy over how they used to work for me.
I have a consult this week for hemhorrhoid surgery and am trying to set up second consults with more weight loss surgeons for second opinions as well.
Since I have not lost too much weight (I had a 10 lb bounce-back from my lowest weight I reached after 2 weeks of protein shakes only when I was very sick this summer) I really don't want to do a revision, but I am at the point where I need to consider it.

nov update

Nov 13, 2007

I've seen 2 more gastro specialists.
I have recurrent bacterial infections of my small bowel and colon.
I've been on like 6 antibiotics.
I am trying a diet called the specific carbohydrate diet (designed for chron's patients) which helped during my first round of cipro, but isn't working right now.
I cycle between diarrhea/gas/hemhorroids which get worse until I am going 20 or more times a day and then I stop eating and only drink protein shakes until things improve.
After a few weeks of this I get down to 142 lbs / size 6 at the price of being exhausted, sick and miserable.
Then an antibiotic kicks in and I can eat again and I balloon up to 155 lbs within 2 weeks. I guess it means that the weight I lose when I am starving is mostly water weight, but it is still hard to have your pants get tight when you are exercising with a trainer.
In any case I am sick almost all the time and very depressed.
I haven't gotten my period in 3 months. My stomach always hurts.
I kind of regret having had the surgery.

I miss all of you on OH and I don't post because I don't want to discourage others from getting the surgery when it may save their lives.

yippee!

I am having a law review article published in a journal. Yeah me!

13 months

Jul 29, 2007

I have had lots of DHR problems still. The doctors finally tried me on creon but it isn't working. So now I am still using creon, lots of immodium, and eating very low carb. It really is making my life a lot harder and even with the restricted diet I still go to the bathroom a lot.

My weight loss is mostly stopped although I am still dropping clothing size.

I have been working out a lot again.

Good low carb finds:
Dixie diner brownies, pancakes, muffins, and molton lava cake
Unsweetened almond milk
Choc-Peanut butter Fluff (sugar free coolwhip, peanut butter, unsweetened chocolate, splenda)

run

Apr 28, 2007

This week I ran/walked 3.5 miles around the charles river in my friend's boyfriend's boxer shorts which barely covered my butt.
And I didn't feel bad about how I looked!
I did nearly die of a heart attack, but I did it!
