My Experience!

Feb 14, 2007

I have many friends that have gone through gastric bypass and having to do the 6 month weight wait I started the support groups several months ago. I started eating healthy 10 months ago but a bad thyroid and metalbolism made it difficult to do anything with it. I started walking at lunch and on weekends and dropped 26 lbs in the 6 months. Very pathetic, but I worked hard for it!

I went to the support groups and felt like an actor who knew every line. I was ready! The time neared and my pre op appt neared and I got the date. Had I kept it I would still be waiting but I got a call the day after my pre op saying they had a cancellation and would I like it! YAY!

I had one week and a few days to use a gift certificate to a very posh restaraunt my husbands boss's got him for Christmas, try the new Mexican Chain in town that my children assured me was as close to "Calif Mexican" (Calif is my home state) as it gets here! I also had to have my final dance with those other two men who were once in my life, Ben and Jerry. Though I had broke them off months ago, my surgeons actually encourage you to have one last treat.

So morning of surgery I was bright eyed at 3 30 AM.  We were at hospital at 5 15 AM and I was wheeled in right on time. I did great!

They called my husband a few times from the OR. After it was over, as always from the 'sleep juice' I am wide awake and ready to be taken to my room.

The stay was only two days. I am glad. I hate all the tubes and the fact you can't sleep, etc.

The BIGGEST SUPRISES from hospital: How many people were in on my surgery team (must of been 10-15 but it is a teaching hospital like in Grey's Anatomy and I know two of the people were interns scrubbing in).
Also, IMHO, the morphine pump SUCKS! It did nothing for me or very little. When I had emergency surgery in 2004 from a lodged gallbladder stone they gave me straight IV morphine and that was much better. As a veteran of fibromyalgia, I am a trooper at handling pain, but the anti inflammatory that was non narcotic they gave me was much better.

I am glad my surgeon is CLOSE TO HOME. I know many that travel and I am sure people have their reasons. But I had heard mine was the best in the area and I do not disagree for a second. He is respectful, has a great sense of humor, is caring has a great bed side mannor, and his staff is there to answer your questions. Should I have had any complications, he was 1/2 hour away.

I am only a 9 days post op and have dropped 15.4 lbs.

I am (soon to be was) a size 22 pants and a size 24 shirt. My weight,  was stagnent for years. With my husband being from N. Ireland, I have flown A LOT. However, I am lucky enough not to have gotten to the seat extender part or been turned away from a ride at an amusement park. I know, however, these things would be inevitable if my weight did not budge.

It was time and all my wonderful friends, all who have been so supportive, have really been there for me. Just an e mail or phone call away, I know I have support!

Now it is time to reclaim my self-esteem too.

My first marriage was good for years but when the Ego landed and the in laws kept coddling (coddle both their kids), it could not survive. My ex became mean and was mean to me especially after going into supervision. He said so many hurtful and hateful things to me. Between him and my mom I am dealing with very very little self esteem however I do know I am worthy of love.

My ex's parents bought him his attorney, his house and even fly out to paint for him! But I can honestly say since the divorce I am standing on my own and with the support of a man who truly loves ME.

Paul was against the surgery at first. He said I was beautiful as is. I asked him who he was looking at!  I am still trying to get him to go to the eye doctor! HA!
Anyway, once he realized that my cholestral and insulin resistance would open me up to some really bad things someday, he knew it was what I wanted and needed more than anything. I still think my children have reservastions, but wait until they see the results!

Just over a week out and no regrets!

I have lots of questions, but no regrets!
