Meeting Dr. Schweitzer

Nov 01, 2010

I had my first surgical consult with Dr. Schweitzer at Johns Hopkins today.  First I showed up SUPER early...I live in Landover, MD and his office is in Lutherville MD, a good hour away.  My appointment was at 8:15a and I wasn't sure what rush our traffic would be like so I left the house at 6.  I got to his office at 7:30.  I weighed in at 309.8 (I had on jeans, boots and a sweater...first time in my life I'm trying to boost the scale...lol)
I met with the Bariatric Program Director for Johns Hopkins first.  She remembered me from the info session I attended.  She asked me a few questions and told me some info.  She was impressed with what I knew about the surgeries (I'm a walking WLS encyclopedia).  She went over my information and gave me the patient resources packet.  I'm excited that I'm officially a patient...lol.  I was going around saying my doctor was Dr. Schweitzer and I'd never met him...lol  Now I'm legit.

He came in and introduced himself.  He seemed pleasant enough.  Got to the point and talked about the RNY and why he likes the VSG.  But he kept saying "that's up to you of course". I let him finish talking and told him about my concerns with their not being long term data.  And he told me that he felt confident with the 5 year data that is out that he expects long term success with the VSG.  He also said the good thing about it is if it doesn't work for whatever reason then it could be converted to bypass if necessary.  I'm comfortable with that.  If I find that 5 or 7 years down the road it's not working or something has happened I can convert.

I'm happy with the surgeon that I chose!!  I can't wait to keep this thing moving and get on the loser's bench!!
