I am a 35 year old mother of 2 from NC. I had RNY gastric bypass on March 12th, 2013.
My journey has been a long one. It began in October of 2009. At that time I had some health issues that were directly related to my weight. I felt helpless and scared. I found a wonderful therapist that deals with eating disorders and I began seeing her regularly. After 3 years of working through my emotions and giving it "one last shot" to do it "the old fashioned" way....
in April of 2012. I decided that I was ready to have surgery. I have Inclusive Health insurance and found out that they require a six month physician supervised weight loss program in conjunction with a registered dietician. It was very frustrating at first, to find out that I was going to have to wait. So I began my journey. I met with my PCP and the registered dietician that works at my therapists office once a month. Due to circumstances that came up, it took me longer than 6 months to complete all of my RD visits.
Anyhow, I submitted my records for approval on Jan 7th 2013 and was initially denied. The insurance company decided that I hadn't seen my PCP enough times throughout the 6 months. I was devastated but also ready for the fight. I saw my PCP again and had him change some of the wording in his recommendation letter and I also saw the RD one more time. She also sent a new letter for approval on Feb12th 2013. Well on the next day I received the call from my bariatric coordinator that I was APPROVED!!! Later that day I got the call to schedule my surgery for March 12th. I had my preop appt. on the 5th and surgery went off as planned. The rest is history!
I feel so fortunate to have been able to be one of the few who get this wonderful gift. What a blessing! Now I'm moving forward and taking it one day at a time.
