4th-9th day post op

Aug 04, 2009

Hi everyone!

The last 5 days have been so much better.  My infection in my arm cleared up and I don't have the severe gas pain as much anymore.  Actually the only issue right now is just some heartburn.  My incisions are healing nice.  I actually only have one small bruise and that is it.

Getting my water and protein in this first week has definatly been a challenge.  I try to sip on something all the time but even then I do not get the total required my doctor would like.  I think it is unrealistic at this point but as each day goes by it seems like I am able to get more fluid in.  My doctor used a size 46 bougie so my stomach size is probably a little bigger than most so maybe that is why I can get a little more fluid in now?  I am always nervous about sipping too much at once cause I don't know what will happen.

Since surgery I have been on a liquid diet.  Each morning I start with 2 TBL of cream of wheat and then for dinner and sometimes lunch I will have about 2oz of broth.   The rest has been filled with water and as much protein as I can get from shakes and those protein shots.

I moved back to my apartment today.  My parents were super great helping me that first week.  Since things have been going so well I decided It was time to head back home.

So I guess for now everything is going good.  I would sure like to get off of the liquid diet and start getting some pureed foods in but I have not been that hungry.  There have been a few days where I have felt hungry but for the most part doing good in that category.

Starting weight at surgery was 387.5.  Today I weigh in at 376.

1st through 3rd day post op Vertical Sleeve

Jul 30, 2009

I had my Vertical Sleeve surgery on July 27th, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan.  My surgeon was Dr. Wayne English.  I went in at 5am and was in recovery by noon.  I spent 2 nights and 3 days at the hospital.  Left MGH on Wednesday around noon.  The surgery went great and the staff was wonderful.  I did end up with an infection in my arm from the IV but I am taking meds for that now.

My first day home:

It was great being home from the hospital.  Staying at my parents house for a few weeks.  It was nice sleeping in a regular bed and not being woken up every hour or two by hospital staff.

I did not get much fluids in or protein in on Wednesday.  I had some terrible gas pains causing some trouble.  I have not been able to have a stool since I entered the hospital.  Not to be gross but the only relief I have had is when I passed some gas.  Everytime I would take a drink my stomach would hurt making it hard to take in fluids.

My second day home, Thursday July 30th.

I had a good nights sleep and woke up around 73o am.  Took pain meds to help me sleep.  I have been able to get in more fluids and protein today.  Only about 2oz per hour.  At least my stomach is not hurting when I drink the fluids.  I am still unable to go to the bathroom but am taking some gasex to help out.  I will probably have to go and buy some laxatives today.  I think once that happens I will feel so much better.

My incisions don't hurt minus one.  The only one that is sore is the one that they did most of the work through.  I get the staples removed on August 11th.

Anway this is all for now.  I will continue to post each day on my progress.  Any suggestions to help me go to the bathroom would be appreciated ha ha.
