I can't say that I have ANY memories of ever being thin as a child. In a few pics taken around the age of 2-3, I appear to have been a normal size, but by the time I was in JK, I was clearly obese. Mom tells this funny story of me insisting on going to JK wearing a training bra because my aunt, who was 6 years older than myself, had started wearing one and I wanted to be like her... HAHA 5 years old and I had boobs!
Anyway, my earliest recollection of dieting was Mom bringing me to Weight Watchers when I was about 7 years old. I don't recall how long I followed the program for but it didn't work because I remember Mom having a hard time finding clothes to fit me when I was growing up. Most humiliating moment was being 10 years old and shopping for school clothes - the only clothes I fit into were MATERNITY pants and tops! By the time I was in grade 6, I weighed 130 lbs and I was probably about 5'2 , 5'3 and I was definitely larger than the girls in my class. Over the years, my weight kept going up. Grade 9 saw me wearing men's Levis in a size 38!!!
Through the years I tried a variety of diets, most without much success. From liquid protein drinks to ketogenic diet to Atkins to Weight Watchers, to Body For Life and countless others, NOTHING worked for very long. I finally decided, in 2005, to speak to my doctor about gastric bypass after a chat friend from NY had her surgery. Seeing her results and how happy she was made me want to do it also. My family doc gave me a referral to Dr. Joffe in Scarborough.
Following my consult with Dr. Joffe in
I now want this surgery more than ever! I want to feel as good as did when I was 184 lbs and full of energy. I want to be able to have kids, to do sports, to be healthy and live to a ripe old age!
