My first impression of Dr. Bailey was that he is very direct and informative, but not too friendly. I met with him in September 2003 and didn't meet him again until December when he had to remove a mass in my abdomen. I was very pleased with his care and found that once I got to know him he is a very caring doctor and has quite a sense of humor! He has been very thorough in discussing all aspects of bariatric surgery with me and my husband. He is very surgically competent and has a great bedside manner once you get to know him. I would recommend him to all my friends.
My first impression of Dr. Bailey was that he was very nice. He joked with me and yet he took me serious when it came to my concerns, problems and desires to have this surgery done. His staff was pleasant to me on the phone and at my appointment. I have been very pleased with LISA at Dr. Bailey's office. She has been supportive and understanding to my frustrations with getting this surgery approved.
1/31/04 Dr.Bailey was very kind to me when I was in the hospital. He seemed genuinely concerned with me and my complaints. I have seen him post op now and he is always friendly and concerned.
8-29-03 Have not met with him - his staff seems wonderful - I have only talked with them on the phone - his office is about 2 1/2 hours away and they actually called and asked if I wanted to go to Shelbyville (which is just 1 1/2 hours away) which I thought was very thoughtful.
09-02 Met with Dr. Bailey - very dry but extremely knowledgable - discussed my medical history (I brought all of my medical history files from my primary physician)- My BMI is 38 - I explained to DR that I can gain 12 lbs in a matter of a few weeks - (my insurance likes a 40)- discussed the surgical process and a bit about what happens after surgey. Since I am a bit of a distance from him, he was really great aobut letting me get my nutritional consult and psych evaluation done at home and then sent to him.
Got both nutritional consult and psych evaluation done and sent (faxed) to Dr Bailey. Then I hit my first bump - My insurance (actually utilization review PHCS) requires a phone call - not a letter. I had to fight with Dr. Baileys nurse for a week to get it done - she insisted that "we just don't call insurance companies, we are too busy to set around on the phone all day" So she sent a letter to my insurance provider - my provider has nothing to do with the approval of the surgery, they just pay the calim (coresource)and the utilization review (PHCS) does not take mail, they are a call center!!!! So coresource recieved the letter and sent back a response stating that they did not approve surgeries BLAH BLAH BLAH - so after about 50 calls to my insurance provider and the utilization review, and the Dr's office. I finally got PHCS to call the DRs office. They (PHCS) were so nice, but could not start the review because the doctors office would not give them a tentative surgery date. So more phone calls ... finally got a date.
10-09-03 Next bump - my employer has decided to change our group plan a bit ... to exclude "surgical correction of obesity or any other obesity related procedures" effective Nov. 1 - I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!!!! I called Dr. Baileys office and asked if we could speed things up a bit - they scheduled my surgery for Oct. 20 - and due to some kind of insurance standards, PHCS has to make a determination within 2 business days - they have all the info that they need, so I should hear something by Tuesday. PLEASE PRAY THAT EVERYTHNG GETS APPROVED -
MY FIRST IMPRESSION OF DR BAILEY WAS THAT HE WAS VERY CARING. HE LISTENED TO MY PROBLEM AND WAS WILLING TO GO BEYOND HIS DUTY TO TRY TO HELP ME GET MY EMPLOYER TO COVER THIS PROCEDURE. DR BAILEY OFC STAFF WAS VERY FRIENDLY THEY WERE CARING ALWAYS CONCERNED ABOUT MY STATUS WITH INS COMP. DR BAILEY HAD A GREAT BEDSIDE MANNER HE ALWAYS EXPLAINED WHAT WAS OR DID HAPPEN. DR BAILEY TALKED TO ME SO THAT I COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS HAPPENNING AND WHAT TO EXPECT.
I only had one brief consult with him but he seemed very nice. He was very short though. His explanation of the surgery seemed rehearsed like he has said the same things 100s of times a day. He handed me a packet which explained the surgery in detail, a copy of how to figure your BMI and a page that listed what a person's ideal weight should be. Asked if I had any questions (which of course I couldn't think of any at the time) and sent me to his nurse to schedule me for my EKG and other tests. I don't remember him mentioning anything about aftercare or a nutricionist (I asked his nurse about it later).
His office staff is great! His secretary was very pleasant and his nurse is wonderful. She faxed all of my paperwork for a quick approval (it only took 2 days!!) and she has been a blessing answering all of my questions and getting my surgery date scheduled fast. Lisa has been the best!
My surgery is scheduled for next month so I don't have a comment on his bedside manner yet.
05/12/03 I am 2 weeks post-op today. I have to say that my opinion of Dr. Bailey has changed since my first meeting with him. He is great! I stayed in the hospital for 5 days and he was there every single day to see how I was. When he asked if I had any questions he looked at me instead of around the room. I could tell that he was actually concerned and wanted to be there for me.
I was admitted to the hospital again last night for dehydration and throwing up (I rushed solid foods by a couple of weeks) and he was wonderful. Telling me what I did wrong but not demeaning me.
I feel that his surgical competence and bedside manner are equally great and I would recommend him to anyone!
