Do you eat before or after your workout? Both? What and Why?

Just curious what everyone does. Do you have a pre-workout snack or post workout snack? Do you have both? What do you eat? Why do you eat that and why do you eat it before/after?

I usually wait at least half an hour from when I last ate and have maybe a sip of water before I workout. I get nauseous if something's in there while I'm working out. Then, lately, I've been drinking a protein shake afterwards. Stops me from guzzling down water, which is what I really want to do. Then I drink lots of water for the next two hours. I don't know if this is beneficial at all to my body, but I've been happy with the progress.

I was told by exercise trainer assigned to bariatric patients.- light protein snack 30 minutes before and liquid protein replacement 1 hr after workout. When I first starting doing cardio - i would feel totally depleted after a 50 min workout- so I ask him about what I should do to prevent this feeling.

Been working out since September and never ate before because I am not hungry. BUT THEN: my trainer postponed my work out one morning. So I at before. She noticed and mentioned a big difference in my performance, though I had not told her I had eaten. Now I try to get in even half a protein shake before. I am really feeling more energized and working harder during the workout itself, and I feel that good, post-workout soreness (cannot believe I just wrote that!) more often.

I heard you need carbs before & protein after. Since I limit carbs I started eating yogurt before & protein shake after.

Protein shake before. And yes some kind of protein after, too.

I do carbs 1/2 before my workout so I can get through the workout.  My trainer always asks what I eat before we start the workout.  I have tried not eating but then I can't perform to my maximum.  After the workout my trainer requires that I drink a protein shake within 30 minutes.  Now that I have very little body fat left I really do need to get the carbs in for the energy since my workouts are HITT.

As soon as I wake up in the morning (@ 4am)  I drink TWO 16.9 oz. bottles of water AND drink ONE Premier Protein shake 1 hr before my workout @ 5am.  Immediately after my workout I drink another TWO 16.9 oz.. of water and within an hr eat a protein breakfast (1 egg and some bacon) or drink another Premier Protein shake (depends on if I'm hungry or not).  I noticed a huge difference in my workout performance following this routine.

Best of luck to you! Take care!
