Struggling BAD with protein intake

I'm only a week out, I can get in my 64ozs. of fluid just fine, vitamins and meds just fine, but for the life of me I can't chug down these protein drinks. I've resulted to drinking Over the Moon fat free milk because it gives me 10 grams of protein in 8 ozs. I;m no where near reaching my 60 -80 grams recomendation. I physically get sick from the supplements. I called my nutritionist and am waiting for a call back, I'm still on full liquids until I get clearance from my surgeon on Monday. I'm really at a lost. Any suggestiions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm with you! Have you tried the clear ISOPURE drinks? I cut mine in 1/2 with water then add a couple more ounces of water which really dilutes the taste. This has helped me have some variety and not have to rely on the thick shakes all the time.

I didn't get all my protein yesterday (inly got 1/2 in and I'm still on clear liquids) and wow, I really felt it today. I'm more sore, more tired, and barely made it around the block this morning! I am making SURE to get the protein now!

Every doctor and NUT is a little different, so go by what yours say however, mine told me for the 1st month to focus more on staying hydrated then protein intake.  While protein should be a very important consideration, don't worry yourself if you don't hit your target each day in the first month. You belly is really angry and swollen and is not always going to be cooperative.   Do look on line for alternative protein drinks -- sometimes the texture of the shakes is just plain weird. I know Bariatric Advantage has protein soups and an "elixir" that you mix into water (I am drinking some White Grape right now and it is pretty tasty).

To me it seems like you are doing the right thing getting your fluids and vitamins and as much protein as you can handle right now.

I think it's borderline abuse to expect someone a week out of surgery to get in 60-80 g of protein!  Concentrate on your hydration and do the best you can ...

You are not going to suffer a life threatening protein deficiency if you are not getting in these amounts.

Someone on here (I think you are a DS'er - sorry for not knowing your name) suggests 30 g at 30 days, 60g at 60 days, 90g at 90 days and that is far more realistic than what you have been told.

Relax - you are doing absolutely fine ...

There are some unflavoured protein powders that you can add to water and crystal light....have you tried that?  Remember as well that all liquids, including those with protein count towards your 64 oz.

Nestle has one called Beneprotein, and some folks pick up some at a local bulk food store.

Good luck with this.

Oh yeah, that's a real challenge.  The way I did it was with a product called ProSTAT64.  I won't try and fool you -- it tastes like total ass no matter what flavor you try.  What I CAN tell you is that a tiny ounce (just 2 tablespoons) holds 15g of protein. I was able to choke down 2oz at a time, 3x a day for the first couple months before I could eat enough to make up for it
.Here's my tried and true method:

1. Hold your nose
2. Slam that shot glass down (keep holding your nose)
3. Rinse your mouth out (keep holding your nose)
4. Smear peanut butter all over the inside of your mouth to kill any residual flavor
5. Finally let go of your nose, wince as you let out one foul burp, and it's over.

Sorry to hear, i'm not one that was ever into protein shakes, but if you like vanilla ice cream, i've found one that works for me from Walmart.  It's called Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Isolate.  I use 6oz of 1% milk which gives 8g pro, plus one scoop of whey protein which gives 30g of protein ='s 38g total.
I do one first thing in the morning an one last thing before bed.  I found it to taste like melted vanilla ice cream, if your a chocolate fan, add some syrup (sugar free) to it to make an ice cream sundae.  This is the only shake that i've been able to keep down.  Good Luck Summerjay

Perhaps diluting the shake with some skim milk?  I used the chocolate Bolthouse Farms protein shake but mixed half and half with milk.  Later when I could tolerate it better, I gradually moved to straight shake.
