Vegan? After WLS

Has anyone turned to Eating Vegan After Weight Loss Surgery? 10 years post op or so...I see people with Avacados in their meals and I know they are high in fat, cant have too much fat, thats what i regained on. After seeing some posts on facebook of Vegan recipes , the food actually looks great mixtures of mostly vegs. and spices in meals. If so what is your experience with it? ..My 20 lb regain recently has me experiencing those lower back aches again. I need to take it off and even 10 more after that.. trying to get back into control, so i dont regain any more...Wendy

A veg*n diet can be very difficult after WLS. It's possible to get enough protein, but it often requires larger volumes of food than we can handle, and many protein sources (like beans) are also too high in carbs for us.

I'm almost willing to bet that you didn't regain weight because of too much fat, you regained because of too many calories.

I don't have any experience in food choices outside of getting in my protein. I have no advice other than my daughter is vegan-ish and she eats a lot of carbs.

What I really wanted to say is that I love you mantra about the most important vitamin for being a friend! =)

My bariatric surgeon, Dr. Garth Davis, wants all of us to become vegan. He posts a lot of things on facebook. He also has a book.

For some people - real vegan - without all the processed crap is a great diet. It can be.

For the rest of us - not so much.

Fat does not makes us fat. Too many carbs can. I once, before RNY, become a vegan. In 3 months I gained 30 lbs - the carbs were too much for my body. And carbs made me really hungry. Even now - if I eat carbs - I get super hungry, and get cravings.

I eat saturated fats: eggs, bacon, butter, coconuts, etc. I eat omega 3 fats like in avocado, olives, fish, etc. Yet my cholesterol over last few years is just ,130-170. Depends on the year when tested.

Fats like avocado, olives, fish , walnuts, etc - are great for heart health. We need those fats. Grains and starchy veggies contribute to our body creating the fats - LDL and triglycerides, that can contribute to a clogged arteries and possible heart attack.

Trans fats - hydrogenated fats or factory made vegetable oil like canola, soybean, etc - can be really bad for us. They are not natural oils and can contribute to inflammation in our bodies.

Vegan can work for some people - but for most- it is too restrictive and a person would need to be really careful not to eat heavily processed "vegan" foods.

(insert boiler plate newbie disclaimer here) My cardiologist is very pro-low carb. So is my oncologist. The oncologist forbids me to eat anything soy related cuz of the hormone positive BC, and the cardiologist doesn't want any starchy, carby, sugary thing anywhere near me.

I know you suffer so with heart issues. What does your cardiologist suggest for diet?
