Foley Catheter??

So I was reading up on some stuff about surgery and I came across an article that talks about possibly having a foley catheter after surgery? Is this true? And if so, do they insert this catheter while you are under anesthetic ?? The whole catheter thing kind of creeps me out !

I think unless there is some specific medical reason you need a catheter, then no - no catheter! They want you up and walking and urinating on your own :)

I hope not as they are one of the leading causes of in-hospital infections, not to mention that the insertion seems like an embarrassing nightmare (they would be inserted while you're under, but still).

Typically, if the surgery is under 3 hours they usually aren't necessary. I haven't had the surgery yet so I'll be interested to hear what other people have experienced. It may vary by doctor and Centre so I hope everyone includes those details in their responses!

Post-surgery it shouldn't be required unless you aren't able to make it to the washroom on your own.

Nope not routine. I ended up with a post op UTI and asked Dr Hagan if I had been catheterized, he said Nope

I found this forum online regarding what you should bring to the hospital when you are getting gastric bypass surgery.. and one of the items was a nightgown or pj's.. then in brackets it says... a nightgown might be better due to the foley catheter insertion.. i was so puzzled because I've never heard of this! 

Well, glad I asked! because if that were the case I would be very disappointed! .. but you guys made me feel a lot better! 

Other than this forum that gave me good advice on what to bring to the hospital I guess their information is somewhat incorrect! I was all freaked out for nothing !

I think it depends on the surgeon.  My surgeon has a catheter placed during surgery and then removed within 24 hours.  Not a problem with the walking or anything since they put it on the IV pole that you push.  You might call your surgeon's office and see what he usually orders.

In 2000 I had a catheter with my rny it was pulled in a couple of days. When I had my revision to DS I Had one also that I had for 4 days. They monitored closely afterwards to make sure I had no problems.  Every time after I went pee the used a bladder scanner to make sure I was emptying completely. 

I didn't have one but as previously stated, you might be best to call your centre and ask what the surgeon prefers.
