Do you believe that "really" fat people lose weight faster than others that are not quite so heavy? I have a GF that just had RNY and my sister who will be doing LapBand and they both make comments that because I am so much more heavy than them, that once I get my surgery; they are sure that I will lose weight so much faster.IS this true or are they just being mean-spirited?

I would ignore people and their rude comments.

I do think men lose faster than women but that's just my crazy opinion.

Success is yours to achieve!! Good luck with your journey.

I have heard that heavier people lose faster at least in the beginning and that "lightweights" typically lose slower. Each person is different and their are too many variables to give a definate.

I'd pretty much guarantee that you will lose faster and much more than the lap bander - not sure why anyone has that anymore - a revision waiting to happen!

I think the rate of losing is a crapshoot - I was a lightweight (40 BMI) and lost 120lbs (120% of my excess weight) in just over 6 months, which is not typical.    Men tend to lose faster and it seems as if those of a higher BMI do tend to lose quicker but not always so ...

Weight loss is different for everybody and a lot goes into it such as exercise, age, ect., ect.

I think that it may appear that individuals that weight more lose more but I think the % of weight maybe the same but again a lot of factors go into it.

Honey,  you follow the rule and do the best that you can.  Enjoy the change.

There's been a lot of talk about this, as well as comparison of numbers.

What seems to be the case is that light weights and heavy weights generally seem to lose about the same percentage of excess weight at a similar rate.

So if you have 200 pounds to lose, you might lose 20 pounds in the same time it takes someone with 100 pounds to lose to drop 10 pounds. Your poundage is more, your percentage of excess weight is the same.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Now as far as your GF and sister, just from the words I didn't hear mean-spirited coming out, but a statement of belief that you will likely lose pounds faster than they will. That's information. If their intonation was obnoxious that's different, but even then all you have to do is refuse to discuss it with them.

It makes me cringe when the statement that " heavyweights lose faster than lightweights" gets tossed around on this forum. Those of us "heavyweights" that do not lose faster, does not make us failures. We may work as hard (or harder) as anyone else to lose. Prior to WLS, I could lose pretty easily...for whatever reason, my body is just not in that mode post op. Please be careful when making general statements...you will lose whatever your body determines...nothing else.( Unless, you sabotage your diet or do not exercise)

To the OP, let your family say whatever they want. What you will do is yet to be determined. Good luck on your upcoming surgery.

There are lots of individual variations to weight loss, but in general people who are very heavy do, indeed, lose much more quickly than lightweights.  It is simply a matter of numbers: it takes roughly a 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound, and it takes roughly 10-12 calories per pound just to keep your body functioning.  That means that someone who weighs 200 pounds burns about 2000 calories per day -- with a normal metabolism and "average" activity -- while someone who weighs 300 pounds burns about 3000 calories per day (but probably a bit less than that in reality because someone at 300 pounds is likely to be more sedentary).  That means that when you are only taking in 500 calories during the first couple of months, the 200 pound person has a 1500 caloric deficit per day (which is 10,500 in a week) while the 300 pound person has a caloric deficit of 2500 calories per day (which is 17,500 in a week).  That means that the lighter person will lose 3 pounds per week while the heavy person will lose 5 pounds per week.

Again, that does not take into consideration individual activity levels and metabolism rates or stalls, of course, but it should help you understand why heavier people DO lose more quickly than lighter people.  It also explains part of the reason that the weight loss slows as you get smaller. Your daily caloric deficit gets smaller, too.

You probably will loose faster. The reason being that your body has to work harder to move around the extra weight. Think of it like this, two identical twins running up a hill one has a heavy vest of 50lbs on. Which do you think will burn more calories? The one carrying more will :) I am addicted to "the biggest looser" and you see it all the time the heavier people loose WAY more WAY faster, given they do the work!

Use this to your advantage. If they are being mean spirited, stay away from them. You did this to change your life for the better. That does not only mean physically! Use this experience to clear out all that negative energy and start a new healthy life in ALL aspects! Negative hurtful behavior so NEVER be tolerated!

Good luck with everything! I know you will do wonderful!
