Time to Man up! (wimmen are incapable of manning up)
So I have been sitting around this week feeling kinda down on myself for not hitting the gym, or rather not being allowed to hit the gym since my car accident early Saturday morning left me with 2 broken ribs, meaning at least 8 weeks recovery. Coming of the high of Augusta and into another few months on the sideline and then rebuilding myself really kind of has me down. So I figure time to throw out a challenge a real one.
In the past I have thrown down a challenge to finish a 5k by the end of summer or something like that well it is time to go Big or Go home! During the days before and After my Half Ironman race many people commented on how inspired they were how they wish they could do something like that. Well here is your chance!
Throwing out a Challenge to meet me at the finish line of Augusta next year! I don't mean you get to stand around for 7 hours and cheer people on, but rather get out a show yourself what you are capable of doing. You have about 11 months to train for this most of you can already do 1 leg of the race you just need to prove you can do the other 2, if not how about a relay team where 3 of you race together with 1 person doing each event.
I promise it will be the most painful day of your life, but also the most rewarding.
So who is on board? we have a FB group for people of all experience levels, and I don't know anyone that has quit it.
Lets show the world what the Formerly Fat can do!
Totally serious in this we can all work together and get this done.

FOr the Half Ironman distance it breaks out as follows
1.2 mile swim (this is in a river with the current also it is wet suit legal, which you can rent, meaning you float a bit easier)
56 mile bike ride few hills on the second half of the course
13.1 run or run/walk pancake flat! through historic downtown Augusta.
Awesome race.

Hmm - I just may take you up on it. I ran my first marathon on Sunday (I was as slow as molasses but I finished). If this is the Augusta in GA, then I definitely will be in. My daughter should be stationed at Fort Gordon that time next year. What's the event called and do you know when registration opens?
Hope your starting to feel better (or at least have some really good drugs). I've heard broken ribs can be a real b*tch.
Yes it is in Augusta GA! registration will start in the next few weeks but here is the website for the event http://ironmanaugusta.com/
We maintain a FB group for those doing or have done the event where a lot of good info has been thrown around going into this years race.

Like any training the key is to go steady and controlled as you increase distance or volume.
For me I take the winter months and focus on the swim and running. My gym has an indoor pool so I can get some early swim in before work. Running I will do 2 treadmill days and 1 long run outdoors. Bike I pretty much did spin classes throught the week and then would do a long ride on the weekends. There are days where I will train 2 disciplines back to back, like do a swim and then a spin class or spin class then run on a TM. These are your brick sessions and train your body to recruit different muscles faster so you can move forward.
Build a training plan or get one off the web and then follow it. in the spring when it warms then take your training outdoors and enjoy it.
