Turmeric & Ginger Root extract for inflammation?
Since we cannot take NSAIDS I was doing some research on other anti-inflammatories and ran across turmeric (circumin) and Ginget Root extract as natural supplements that have anti-inflammatory properties, so I thought I would ask if any of you have used these products for pain from inflammation (tendonitis, bursitis, etc.). And if you have do you have any specific brands you would recommend?
Thanks
Rich
I tried ginger for about a month with no change. Then I tried tumeric and I've been doing that for about three months now and I think it's helping a lot. I have a lot of pain and inflammation in my lower back and my back specialist kept telling me that NSAIDS would really help and I kept saying "But I can't take those." It took a few weeks before I noticed improvement with the tumeric. It's not something you'll get relief from right away.
There are some people that shouldn't use tumeric, or should use it very cautiously, like people on blood thinners and people that are diabetic, so you probably want to research that too, if you haven't already. It's helped me a lot, though.
I think the combination of the tumeric and my service dog, who makes it so I don't have to do much bending forward anymore, has made a huge difference for me. I have significantly less back pain than I used to.

Thanks. I picked up some of both to give it a try. I am also trying a combination of Tramadol and Tylenol. I'm seeing my pain Dr. tomorrow and will hopefully get a shot in the butt (LOL) and I'll be asking him about these things as well. Especially since I would need him to write me a script for the tramadol, since I only have a little left over from a past surgery. Leftover Norco did nothing for the pain except take a (very) little of the edge off.
Getting old stinks. Except that it still beats the alternative.
Can you tell me more about Tumeric? I have arthritis in my back neck and hips, but my hips aren't bothering me as much now. I'm not diabetic or on blood thinners, but I did have to give up all of my NSAIDS. Thanks!
P.S. I take Allopurinal now for my gout. Someone mentioned Indocin, which we can't have.
It's an herb often used in Indian cooking. You can buy it in capsule form at lots of places that sell vitamins. The brand I'm currently using is Nature's Bounty, just because I found it cheap at drugstore.com. I'm taking 450 mg daily right now.
If you google it, you should find some info.

I read a scientific article. For markers associated with inflammation to be reduced, the mice were administered 500 mg/kg cucumin (sp; the active ingredient of tumeric). That is a lot. I read somewhere that the safety of tumeric been assessed in levels as high has 4 grams (I do not recollect if 4 grams was found safe).
Anyway, due to a bad back, I am looking into tumeric capsules as well. I am going to start at 1 gram/day for 30 days, then re-assess my pain/discomfort levels (as objectively as one can).
I hope that WLS surgery will help with the discomfort experienced at L5/S1 although I do recognize that there is no guarantee.
Best wishes.
