How come ?? This makes NO sense to me !!!
I've always had back problems--always with my lower back. I REALLY thought if I lost a large amount of weight my back would get better-less pain, more flexible. Well, I've lost 130 pounds and guess what? My back is WORSE !! Not only does my lower back hurt all the time but now the middle of my back and across my shoulders is driving me NUTS. I've tried muscle relaxers, heat patches, heat creams and even prescription pain meds--NOTHING helps. Has this happened to any one else--does anyone have any suggestions for relief or perhaps a reason why this would be taking place? I wanted to lose weight to feel better not worse-lol.
Thanks for any suggestions for relief !!!
I had the same issue when I lost weight, although not to the extreme you are describing. I had a dull ache in my lower back, and it intensified when I got smaller. I imagine that losing the weight relieved the pressure and all of the surrounding muscles and nerves were sore as a result. It did get better over time, but a few things helped.
-Placing a pillow at the small of my back when sitting in a chair. This gave me some support and helped my posture.
-Make a conscious effort to roll your shoulders back when you stand up. You'd be surprised at how often you think you are standing up straight and your shoulders are actually hunched.
-If you work at a computer, adjust your monitor. Your head and neck should remain even as you type. If you catch yourself tilting it down or up regularly, you may need to adjust the height.
-Do some basic yoga sun salutations. Doing even 4-5 of these was really helpful. It stretched and strengthened the muscles in my lower back which consequently gave me more support and less soreness/stiffness. It will only take 10 minutes, and you can find a brief video demo on www.yogajournal.com.
I hope that you are able to get some relief soon! It won't happen overnight, but you'll get better. :-)

I had horrible back and shoulder pain prior and after surgery. I am much better since being treated for ruptured disc. The lower back ruptured disc was also causing sciatica down the leg. It took about a year of back injections until it healed. Although, the sciatica does act up on occasion.

Check with a specialist to rule out disc problems, etc, then go to a physical therapist or a personal trainer to work out. I have back problems too, they subsided greatly when I started working out, but now have returned so I'm back to the chiropractor and other practitioners, while working with my trainer to avoid the pain and help correct it. He said it's been years creating the problems, it'll take a year or more to correct them.
yoga chiropractor acupuncture.. that's what I do.

BTW I've decided to not use any muscle relaxers or pain killers any more if I can help it...that forces me to take an active roll in my back health rather than laying still hoping some pills will fix it. I have scoliosis, a spinal fusion, degenerative disk disease, SI joint problems....but intensive exercise and keeping mobile seems to be the ticket. Unfortunately.
