1st day of liquid pre-op

Today is my first day of the optifast two week protein shake diet before my surgery. Just made my first shake and I have to say its not really all that bad. Not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Here's to being successful!
YAY FOR YOU!! My best advice is to be 100% clear on what is allowed on your pre-op plan and stick to it. My plan did not specify that tomato soup was allowed, but I love it and asked and was told that it had to be water, not dairy based. Otherwise I would have gone 22 days without it and could have had it. Which would not have been life altering, but I had a cup of it just about daily, so I was very glad to be able to enjoy it! Also, if I had just assumed tomato was okay, I might have done one with milk which would have been a big no-no. So having clarity on what is allowed can be a way to expand what you are able to enjoy pre-op.
Is your surgery on the 9th? Sending you positive vibes for a great experience!!

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way. Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!
My surgery is on the 10th. I have to do two weeks of the optifast and then one day of nothing bu****er and magnesium citrate (I think thats what it is called).
Thanks for the advice. I will have to call to clarify, because it was my understanding that I wasn't allowed anything but the shakes and water. But if I am able to have other things to throw a mix into it, I definately need to know. The first shake this morning started off good, but I was gagging by the end of it. I just plugged my nose and drank it really fast. LOL.

Try a straw in a cup with a covered lid. I know that is helpful for some.

I am doing a 4 week pre-op diet where I have some high protein foods for 2 weeks with shakes and then 2 weeks with just shakes. I had a imetoblic shake today and it wasn't bad. I did a 1 month juice fast over the summer and drinking kale and celery etc was so so hard, so drinking these flavored shakes seems like a treat to me!
Good luck!

I am still amazed at the difference between the pre op diets. I talked to someone earlier, who had no pre op diet at all, then some who have the shakes. My surgeon forbids the shakes and when I have my surgery in a week, I worry about getting the protein in. I am doing my pre op diet now and it is high protein, low carb, three meals a day and no snacking. I wish you all the best and good luck!!
Ignore all the naysayers that will post about it being somehow dangerous to not do shakes - there are many of us here that do all food and all of us have survived and very successfully I might add
I've never had a protein deficiency and am very hale and hearty without a protein shake or Quest bar ever having passed my lips! You'll do fine ...
