Is it weird to be scared that it's going so well?

Hi Everyone,

I have been lurking on the site for some months, and I have posted a few times.  I know in the past I have posted looking for help, or when my incisions looked infected...ie had a problem.  This post isn't really a problem - it's like a non-problem problem!

My story: I was at my highest weight EVER as of December 1, 2013.  I had a lot of "last suppers" in November, plus Thanksgiving.  I did a two week pre-op liquid diet of 1,200 calories, and lost 19 lbs by the time I had my RNY one week ago, on Monday, December 16th.  Going into the surgery, I was scared.  I was actually crying when I entered the OR.  When they woke me up, I felt great.  Within one hour I was walking and went to the bathroom.  They told me I was a model patient and all had gone well.

Starting that night, I seriously wondered if maybe they didn't do surgery and I was part of a placebo group!  I felt totally fine!  I was discharged early the following day.  I didn't need a swallow test since I could easily keep down ice chips and sips of water.  I came home on Tuesday and was a bit sore Wednesday and maybe a little bit Thursday.  Friday I felt perfectly fine, if a little weak. I even went out with friends that evening.

I went back to work today, one week after surgery.  I have slightly less energy than normal, but am still pretty good.  I am averaging 400 or 450 calories a day in protein drinks, chicken broth with protein powder, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles.  I had some fat-free ricotta microwaved with herbs and spices today.  A quarter cup.  I ate it slowly but easily.

I have no trouble getting in my liquids either.  I sip sip sip all day long.  Not 30 minutes after meals of course.  I mostly stick to water.  I have always loved water.  But I can drink 6 sips of water and then 10 minutes later I have six more.

I guess my question is this.  I am losing weight and I am having no issues, no problems, no intolerances.  My greatest fear is that I will be the one it doesn't work for!  Like, once I move to pureed food in 9 days, and then normal food two weeks later, I will just tolerate anything and everything.  What if I don't have a food size limit?  I just ate a quarter cup of ricotta and was fine.  Have you ever heard of anyone that just sailed through and never had an issue and tolerated everything?  I know it sounds nuts but I kinda want to be one of the people who write "I hate food, I can't eat anything, nothing stays down".  Is that crazy?

Please chime in if you had an easy time of it like me.  I really really really am committed to being a success story.  I have lost almost 10% of my body weight in 22 days, so obviously I'm off to a strong start.  I need someone to tell me it goes on!  Sorry for being so needy :)

Thanks!

Most people do well and tolerate most things, if not everything.  If most people had complications, surgeons probably wouldn't be doing this surgery.

Why do you want to have trouble eating and get sick easily?

You sound like me.....you are fine...and yes, it's normal to feel that way....just wait til it shows up on the scale...you will be soooooo happy....I doubt they would have faked your entire surgery....too many people to lose their jobs over that..!   Congrats. Sounds like you are doing great.  Leap of faith!

You are perfectly normal.   Contrary to popular belief, there are no prizes for having problems - rejoice that you are one of the majority who have this surgery and sail through!!!!!

Believe me, the first time you have some dense protein, you will know you had surgery, not because it's going to be a problem, but because you will be satiated by a mouthful or two!!!!

Congratulations on your success so far - woo hoo

The vast majority of people who have RNY have no trouble at all.  The ones who have lots of trouble with drinking or vomiting or whatever are the unusual ones!  I know it doesn't seem that way here, but it is true... You just SEE more posts about trouble because those people need support whereas the ones (like you) who aren't having trouble don't post because they don't really have anything to say!

You are quite normal, and will likely not have any trouble (or very little trouble) once you advance foods.  Again, most people advance their foods with no trouble beyond maybe some queasiness when they try a certain new food or have an uncomfortable (but not painful) heavy pouch feeling when they start eating dense proteins.  Some of us started eating soft foods just days after surgery and had no trouble at all!

[sigh of relief]

Thanks, all!  It's not that I want to have problems, it's just that I read so many posts of people saying "Help I can't keep anything down" and I think "hmm I can easily drink a protein shake or eat 1/4 cup of yogurt" and I wonder if it's working.  I guess in my mind I know it's working because a. I am losing weight and b. prior to Dec 1st I would have keeled over and died if I only had 400 calories in a day (well really I would have just sabotaged it with a pizza lol) but still...it helps to have other people tell me I am not insane :)

So thank you again!!!

Hi DCgirl,

I had my surgery on the same date, and WISH I had your problem!!

:)

It's was a little hard for me the 1st couple of days drinking, just couldn't stand the thought of drinking protein shakes, yuk. But it's been easier, thank goodness.

Good luck to you.

I can only recommend that you go on amazon.com and buy the Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein Shakes. It's a LIFESAVER.  I was choking down shakes until I got my hands on these recipes.  They are phenomenal!  Good luck!

My husband and I each had great experiences. I am 7+ months out and he was a year in October.

We follow the rules very carefully and make sure we're taking full advantage of the honeymoon period and are fully committed to be lifelong successes in this new life. I think a lot of people come here and kvetch, even when they are clearly NOT doing what they should be doing and then wonder why things are not going well.

I lost over 100 lbs in 6ish months and another 40 prior to that. I am 25 lbs from goal and while I know that I'll have to work even harder once the honeymoon period ends, I am ready for that extra effort!  Make the changes now and enjoy the benefits always. :)

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I also wondered if I was in a placebo group -- until I didn't chew one piece of meat quite enough, got the foamies, and it came up an hour later. Such a tiny little thing caused such distress. That's how I learned my lesson.

It still shocks me how little I can eat at one sitting.
