Hi I am a 49 black female HB,diabetic since 30,currently on gliperzide, bydueron injection. I had the Lapland in 2003, and removed in 2011,at the same time the doctor plicated me. I did not lose anything, my a1c is 7.6. My bmi is 32.1 I am 5'6 ,200-197. Thinking about surgery?

I am not sure you meet the requirements for the surgery, the general standard is bmi 35 or more with co morbid conditions (diabetes counts as one).  Last April my bmi was 51.2 and a1c was 8.7.  My a1c is now 5.5 and I am off the diabetic meds glipizide and metformin.  It put mine in "remission".  Good luck, call your insurance company and ask what their specific requirements are and start there.

If you are doing this to get rid of type II diabetes, you need to get a DS ...   RNY *may* put you in remission, but only likely for the short term.   The DS has much better diabetes resolution rates.

There is a woman at my surgeon's support group who is doing exactly this. She doesn't really fit the weight criteria, but her diabetes is out of control. So she's have DS at Duke and the rate is 98% or something amazing like that with the DS for curbing Type II.

Good luck in getting approved!

HW333--SW 289--GW of 160 5' 11" woman.  I only know the way I know & when you ask for input/advice, you'll get the way I've been successful through my surgeon & nutritionist. Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

My diabetes II resolved after my RNY and has not returned.  I do keep a check on my blood glucose levels, and restrict my refined carbs, and the results have been that my a1C has been at less than 6 for seven years.  RNY is a good type of surgery.
