My 600 lb Life

Just some observations. . . and wanted to see what others think about this show.  I know the people on this show are on the extreme side of obesity, and I can't imagine how hard life must be for them.  As a former (and forever) fatty myself, I can relate. . .somewhat.  Anyway, it amazes me the lengths some of these people go to to actually have Dr. N do their surgery (even moving to Texas) and then after they don't lose any weight and eat fast food, etc.  I also wonder if the surgery is different for different people.  I see some of them take huge bites of food - especially meat and eat pretty decent sized quantities after surgery and wonder how that is possible.  I am 14 months out and still have to take very small bites and eat very slowly or I will certainly have to throw up or feel super uncomfortable for a long time.  I couldn't eat fast food or large bites if I tried.  It would be nearly impossible.  Does anyone else experience this?  I could (which I don't) eat A LOT of junk if I wanted to.  I could eat a lot of chips, candy, etc. and graze on that type of food all day and not be very successful with weight loss.  None of that type of food seems to bother me.  What do you guys think about the show??

I enjoy watching the shows, and I'm with you - can't believe what some of them eat.  Last night the young farmer whose first solid food meal was sausages dipped in ketchup absolutely amazed me.  I couldn't think of eating that after one month!  And when he stopped for chicken fingers and ate them with a big plate of fries and ketchup - I couldn't believe it!  The one that really surprised me, though, was Ricky from Guam.  He couldn't stop eating even to lose enough so that he could get surgery.  His wife made him all the stuff he shouldn't eat because 'he was the man' and she had to cook what he wanted.  And then he died before he could have surgery and she didn't even attend the funeral.  That was so weird...and sad.  He kept crying that he needed help and wasn't able to accept it by proving he could eat a little less.

Good luck to all of us on our journeys!

The Ricky from Guam story was sad because she enabled him right up to his death and I think there was probably some family stuff that prevented her from going to his funeral ...

Very sad, but inevitable, end.

I watched that show with Ricky.  Had mixed feelings but understand his wife.  He made it clear that he was going to eat what he wants and my guess is that no matter how much she may have wanted him to lose weight, she found it impossible to win an argument about eating with him.  After so much time and energy spent of everyone trying to help him help himself, she gave up.  I don't think she is without blame.  Just that even tho he couldn't move much, his voice overpowered her into just doing it to shut him up.  Had she gone to his funeral, she most likely would have had to listen to his family blame her.  Just like all of us here, he was responsible for himself but wanted everyone else to do the work for him.

I frankly was offended at his attitude of "I'm DYING HERE AND YOU AREN'T DOING ENOUGH TO HELP ME!"

My poor pouch almost exploded when I heard the snap of that sausage skin last night - I know he said he felt stuffed but I would have been  after one mouthful of that skin.  (I was hoping someone would start a thread on this, so I could share)

I also can't eat huge mouthfuls like that either.   Does anyone else notice how dirty some of these homes are too?  I know it must be hard when you are not mobile, but I can't imagine having to live in squalor - heck I don't even understand why people don't clean their mirrors before bathroom selfies or pick up their clothes behind them before they snap a pic!

He seemed such a nice guy though - I hope he's happy!

It's horrifying and fascinating at the same time.

I do wonder, sometimes, if they aren't doing a disservice by putting the spot light on these poor people who are such extreme examples.  I mean, it could be so much more educational for the general public if they would just follow a 300 lb person through the journey...

I do find human behavior facinating!  I enjoy the show but it really frustrates me!  I have not been able to tolerate grease since my RNY.  I can't eat fried foods without throwing up.  I also can't take big bites and I do have to chew 20 or more times before I swallow or solid food often comes back up.

I don't understand how they could eat an entire burrito, taking such big bites, at just one month post-op.  Just wasn't my post-op experience - at all.

I often wonder what "diet" they are on for the month pre-op and then after surgery?  Certainly the foods I see in the TV program  & the serving sizes weren't typical of my bariatric food plan.

Denial and rationalizations abound on this program.  I admit I often rationalize, but the excuses why the scale went up or barely down - just frustrate me.  "I'm holding water", "I followed the plan you gave me Dr. N", "I think the scale was wrong", "I only ate twice a day" ???

I also try to keep an open mind because (especially in the US) obesity abounds and if I don't stay on my plan I could become morbidly obese again.  Watching this show helps motivate me to stay on track and also motivates me to not eat "fast food".  Fast Food seems to be the common denominator for every person on this show so far.

Just my thoughts, Penny
