RNY Patients how on earth do you take antibiotics???

I recently found out that because I am not getting enough water and liquids through my system, I have a bladder infection.

Yesterday I was put on an antibiotic and I have to take it twice a day. I made sure it was a little capsule but I get SO SICK when I take it! It is a 100mg antibiotic and I was told that it is "mild" and that "patients don't ever have problems with it" UGH! I have taken it with some food and even opened it up to sprinkle with applesauce but both ways, I get really really sick.

Does anyone have any helpful hints? I have talked to the doctors already and they said that if the treatment is worse than the illness that I should stop the treatment but I really want to get rid of the bladder infection.

Has anyone had trouble with antibiotics?

Take it with more liquid to wa**** well clear of the pouch before the capsule starts to disintegrate.  Opening it up will only make matters worse.

Have you had problems with antibiotics? The bottle says to take it with food but I was thinking that maybe I can eat some food after I take it? What do you think?

No, I have not had trouble with antibiotics, but did have another med that bothered my pouch, and that was when my surgeon told me to follow it with as much water as I could be use the further down I could wa**** the less trouble I would have.

She was right.

Since you don't have the normal stomach where food and medicine sit for a while before going into the intestine, it really doesn't matter nearly as much if you take things with food, but you can certainly eat something right after you take it. The important thing is to get it beyond the pouch before it starts dissolving the coating.

That makes sense! Thank you so much! I have been stressing out like crazy all morning. Yesterday I was nauseous and vomiting/dry heaving all day! I will try this and let you know! Thank you!

I think most meds would make me very nauseous if I opened them up and put them in applesauce.

I have had antibiotics in the past that made me nauseous.  If the nausea is too severe, they should either prescribe a different antibiotic or prescribe something to help with the nausea.

I haven't had any more trouble with them post op than pre op, though.  Antibiotics can cause nausea in patients whether they've had RNY or not.

I want to say thank you because the "drink lots of water to chase the pill to help it bypass your stomach" trick worked! I took the antibiotic at 10AM this morning and now 3 hours later, I have still not thrown up. I felt a little nauseous but nothing too awful and now I am just working on getting some food in my system. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

My doc told me we don't dissolve capsules so I wasn't to take them. I ask the pharmacist or doc who prescribes for the chewable form of antibiotic (tastes pretty good too) or the liquid form. We don't

dissolve pills like we did before -depending on where your pouch was located by the surgeon. I found chewables worked great, pill form not capsule could be broken in 2 and taken that way with water or

the liquid form. Call the pharmacist and see if they have it and call the doc and ask for a different prescription. It helps if you can get the right does in at the right time and remember to push the water.

I've taken hundreds (nay, thousands) of capsules over the years (I take a probiotic capsule as well as stool softeners every day) and never found one in my toilet - that would indicate to me that we do, in fact,  dissolve capsules!
