RNY and pregnancy

My first choice surgery, because I have PCOS, is RNY.  My physician told me today that it would be so hard to have a baby if I were to get RNY. Am I going to have problems conceiving a healthy baby if I have RNY?

Thanks in advance

Hello! I am 27 years old and I am almost 2 months out from RNY. One of the main reasons that I had WLS is because I would like to have a family some day and being overweight is not a healthy way to go through pregnancy. You shouldn't get pregnant for 1.5 - 2yrs after having RNY because it isn't safe for the baby if you aren't able to get enough nutrients, protein, vitamins, water etc. but after that… you can have a healthy pregnancy and many healthy babies!

I would ask your doctor to clarify, I don't think he/she gave you the right information or perhaps they didn't explain it correctly.

She definitely said "down the road" meaning at all.  I was just worried that I wouldn't be able to have a happy healthy baby.  Thank you for clarifying time wise.

Oh no! Well, I hope she is incorrect. I have spoken with a team of doctors and nurses and have been reassured many times that I can have a healthy pregnancy in 2 years. I have read some posts from folks who have gone through pregnancy after surgery and have had healthy pregnancy and babies. I hope it is the same for us!

I have read the same. I really hope you are successful in getting pregnant.  Having PCOS, I have to be on fertility drugs and all that just to get pregnant and the rate of miscarriage is so high. I just want my body to do what it's supposed to.  I am sure you are right because I have read that it boosts fertility. Good Luck!

I am sorry to hear about the PCOS! I hope that everything will go smoothly for you with pregnancy and childbirth. I will keep you in my thoughts.

My doctor said that it absolutely boosts fertility and that I have to be EXTRA careful because I am "fertile Murtle" while losing weight and that as my weight decreases, my fertility increases.

Good luck girl!

Your physician has no idea what they are talking about.   Go to the pregnancy board and see how many people are able to have healthy babies after RNY

You might want to consider getting a more knowledgeable and sympathetic physician - not knowing this very basic fact about life after RNY is pretty scary and doesn't bode well for your future care!

I guess I should tell my dear friend, who suffered infertility for 8 years before her RNY that having those FIVE  babies in 6 years afterwards was really hard.  Hmm.  I know for a fact that 4 of them were completely unplanned.  She had 3 failed IVFs before surgery.

I think your PCP is WRONG.

Thanks ladies! Good to know! She wasn't technically my physician.  She was filling in because my specific physician was having a busy day; but that's a whole different story.  I think she was having a hard time separating her personal view from her professional view.  Needless to say, she won't be seeing me again.

I am, however, relieved to hear your stories and good thoughts.  It eases the weight on my chest a little more. I did get a referral from my insurance for a surgeon today and am excited to make an appointment with them.  I will make sure I get every bit of info I can.

Thanks again,
