ANyone else absolutely hate exercise? Lost 172 lbs without it

I want to echo what Sherrie said--adding muscle is what you want to do.  It ups your metabolism and will make you leaner (though admittedly not necessarily drop a lot of pounds).  You're not going to look like a bodybuilder.  That's not going to happen.  But it's going to help you be stronger, fitter, and you'll get more bang for your buck with less time spent.  I know my weight loss grinds to a halt if I'm not doing some form of exercise.

I was never a big exercise fan either till this surgery and time spent with a personal trainer.  I just love it.  What might be helpful for you is to do a single session with a personal trainer, and get his or her suggestions for what would be a good workout regime for you.  I realize it's pricey to do on an ongoing basis.  But a single session might be enough to point you in the right direction.

Good luck!  You've done great so far.

Exercise isn't a path to losing weight, it's a path to gainng health.    Having your guts rearranged may have resulted in you looking cuter, but presumably we all go into it with a thought (however vague) that it is going to make us healthier?

I was a real gym bunny when I started, but as time has gone on and I've done everything from running to biking to classes, I've got to the stage where I "exercise" every day - I get out and walk and chase my dogs around for at least an hour every day ...    I enjoy it, they enjoy it, and it keeps my body healthy.

I would be interested to know how many people this far out still go to the gym, run marathons etc - probably not many - and that's ok ...   The goal is overall health and not an exercise binge for a couple of months to lose those last few pesky pounds!!!!

I am almost 10 years out and started gaining the last year, more really the last 6 months. I still go to the gym but my energy has just gone. I do treadmill and weight machines. I can only do maybe 15 minutes on eliptical. Before, I used to do an hour. Just when I think I have figured out how to get in at least 3 days at the gym, something changes and I can't make it. But still trying to get there. I always say that gym time is my time for me.

If you are eating at a caloric deficit, you cannot build muscle. You can build strength, but it is not the same as adding new muscle.

A lengthy calorie deficit like the kind we are (or were) all on will let you lose fat, but you will also lose lean body mass, mostly muscle. It's an inevitable part of long term, rapid, massive weight loss. What strength training can do is maximize the amount of fat lost, and minimize the amount of lean body mass lost.

Muscle burns a very little more calories than fat. The idea that replacing fat with muscle will turn you into some calorie-burning furnace is mostly myth.

I went to the gym while I was losing in order to preserve as much muscle as I could. But it's been over a year without any kind of formal exercise. I walk every day, and use a recumbent bike while I watch tv, but it isn't very strenuous. I, too, really hate exercise. But I get my 10,000 steps every day on my FitBit, and I get as much activity as I can.

Some studies haae shown that many people who bust their ass at the gym every day are burning fewer calories, because they wear themselves out, and compensate by being very sedentary the rest of the day. Look up NEAT, which is Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Basically it's the sum of your activity for the day that is not exercise. Those that have high levels of NEAT will burn more calories than someone who spends an hour at the gymn and then sits around the rest of the day.

The best advice I can give you is to hire a personal trainer.  Interview several until you find someone who you can work well with.  I would also look at different gyms and see what you really like.  Membership is not a bargain if you don't use it.

Invest in great cross trainer shoes, a couple of cute workout outfits, a great-fitting bra, maybe coordinating headbands.  If available, rent a locker and keep body wash, shampoo, blow dryer, extra underwear and towels there.  I schedule my work so that I leave work early on gym days.  I work five hours on gym days.  I consider the three hours getting to the gym, working out, showering, and getting home to be three hours of my workday.

I know that you believe that making extra money is more important right now.  There will never be a perfect time to do this.  Think of it as an investment in your future.

I don't want to discourage you from exercise; however, I must point out that exercise is not really a path to weight loss.  If you're maintaining your weight at 200 pounds you're eating too much.  Plus you probably already "exercise" a lot more than you think, being a nurse who is presumably on her feet many hours every day.

I think your primary concern should be the examination of what you're eating.  I wish you the best.

Can't offer alot of advice (any really) because I hate it too!!!!  LOL

Just wanted to offer support and let you know you are not alone.

I have been walking, but it has also hit me that I am going to have to do more than that to get this last 40 pounds gone.

You look amazing!!!

Best of Luck!!!

I started walking, then running.  I don't love it, but make myself do it.  On days I am unable to get out for a walk/run due to schedule, kids, etc., I have an exercise tape I do at home, it's a walking with weights tape.  It's 25 minutes long, I can fit it into my schedule without too much reluctance.

I eat to accomodate the fact I don't exercise, hence my low calories, exercise does not make you lose weight without calorie reduction.  It is healthy and good for you but less calories are the key to diet success.  And if you stop and don't reduce calories accordingly expect re-gain.
